    • To reduce wavelength chirp and produce multi-valued signal light that can be readily demodulated on a receiver side, a Mach-Zehnder type optical modulator includes an incident waveguide that branches input light, a pair of optical waveguides that respectively transmit the branched light and exhibit an electro-optic effect, a pair of signal electrodes arranged along the optical waveguides, and an exit waveguide that outputs an interfered light of the light transmitted through the optical waveguides. Furthermore, at a boundary, the polarity of each of the optical waveguides reverses, and either the optical waveguides or the signal electrodes cross each other.

    • An optical communication device includes a substrate which has electro-optical effect; a first optical modulator which has a pair of waveguides formed in the substrate; a second optical modulator which has a pair of waveguides formed in the substrate; a waveguide coupler which is provided in an output of the first optical modulator, the waveguide coupler being able to couple and branch light propagating through the pair of waveguides of the first optical modulator; and a delay connecting section which gives differential delay to the output branched by the waveguide coupler and inputs the output to the pair of waveguide of the second optical modulator. As a result, the optical communication device and optical device in which insertion loss is reduced compared with the conventional optical modulator can be provided.

    • An object of the invention is to provide a Mach-Zehnder type optical modulator that can reduce wavelength chirp occurring in a modulated light, and also can reduce an optical loss with a small sized configuration. To this end, according to the present Mach-Zehnder type optical modulator, in a configuration where optical waveguides and a coplanar electrode are formed on a substrate having an electro-optical effect, a polarization inversed region is formed in a part of an interaction portion of the substrate, and a signal electrode is arranged above one of parallel waveguides in a polarization inversed region and is arranged above the other parallel waveguide in a non-inversed region. Furthermore, a surface area of the substrate positioned on both sides of each of the parallel waveguides is lowered to provide a ridge structure section, and a buffer layer is formed on a ridge side face thereof.

    • The present invention has an object to provide a Mach-Zehnder optical modulator with the excellent productivity and reliability, which can obtain a favorable optical response characteristic even if a high frequency electric signal is applied to a signal electrode. To this end, the present optical modulator is configured such that, in a Mach-Zehnder optical modulator in which an optical waveguide and a coplanar electrode are formed on a surface of a substrate having an electro-optic effect, floating electrodes formed using a conducting material, are provided on side faces along parallel waveguides, among side faces substantially perpendicular to the surface of the substrate. Thus, even when a high frequency electric signal is applied to the signal electrode, a phenomenon is suppressed in which a particular frequency resonates within the substrate, and an occurrence of dip in a particular frequency is avoided.
