Tramcars; doors ; footboards, steps, etc.; ingress and egress of passengers, controlling.-Relates to fare prepayment cars. Fig. 2 shows a tramcar in which the stairway rises from a point adjacent to the bulkhead 4 and extends towards the end of the vehicle. An exit 12 for use on the front platform by top-deck passengers, and disposed beneath the upper landing 11 of the stairway, is controlled by a pair of swinging gates 13 operable by the motorman by handle 17, rod 15, and link 13 connecting cranks 14 on the gate posts. The stanchion 8 of the guide-rail is offset from the bulkhead to provide an exit way from the stairs to the step 6. A sliding door 3 is shown. Figs. 3 and 4 show respectively the lower platform and the arrangement of the psssageway 22 and seats 21 on the top deck for an omnibus or tramcar. In this case the entrance and exit steps 6 , 6 are separated by a rail 5 , and the gate 20 in conjunction with the short rail 5 carrying the ticket machine and box 18, 19 defines the passageways on the platform. The bulkhead sections 2 converge inwards to give greater room on the platform. According to the Provisional Specification, a concave bulkhead having similarlyshaped doors operable by mechanism by the conductor may be employed. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 14,584/12.

Theclamp is formed from the thin sheet-steel blank A, Fig. 4, which is pressed between dies to curve the parts e to the form shown in Fig. 5, and to bend over the lugs b, a, which are adapted to engage respectively with the top of the cover D and the underside of the rim c, Fig. 2. It is then passed through suitable rollers, which bend it into circular form, the resilient portions f and the more rigid clamping portions e together forming a flexible band. The lugs g are pressed out for the attachment of the locking-lever C, Fig. 1, and the end j is folded to form a strengthened eye, Fig. 5. In use, the clamp is placed over the vessel until the lugs b rest on the cover, then the lug l on the lever C is passed through the eye j, and the lever is pressed back into the position shown in Fig. 1, so tightening the clamp and locking it in position. Fig. 9 shows a different arrangement for connecting the ends of the clamp. The ends are drawn together, by means of suitable pliers &c. engaged with the ears p, q, until the lug n on one end enters the notch o in the other. In the further modification shown in Fig. 10, the tongue V is passed through the eye t and bent backwards.
