摘要： First and second track and hold stages track and store an input voltage for a sample of an analog input signal. A coarse reference ladder provides a plurality of coarse references. In one embodiment, the coarse reference ladder includes a first coarse reference and a second coarse reference ladder. A coarse ADC performs a first comparison of the input voltage and the plurality of coarse references and outputs a coarse output based on the first comparison. A switch matrix includes a plurality of switches and is configured to close a switch corresponding to a coarse reference based on the coarse output. A fine reference ladder provides a plurality of fine references. A fine ADC performs a second comparison of the input voltage and the plurality of fine references and outputs a fine output based on the second comparison. Logic outputs a digital output for the sample of the analog input signal based on the coarse output and the fine output.

摘要： Method and apparatus for generating a random number, such as for use in a security protocol to control access to a data processing system. A processor generates the random number in relation to a back electromotive force (BEMF) value. The BEMF value is preferably obtained in response to application of current to a circuit. The circuit preferably comprises a coil and the application of current preferably induces a relatively small movement of the coil. The random number is preferably a multi-bit digital value, and each bit of the random number is determined in relation to whether the corresponding BEMF value is even or odd. The coil preferably comprises a coil of a voice coil motor (VCM) used to position a transducer adjacent a rotatable storage medium, and the random number is preferably generated while the medium is in a non-rotatable state.

摘要： An apparatus and associated method for directing windage involves a body defining an aperture. A fastener is operably disposed in the aperture and is selectively engageable with a fixed support member between a first mode permitting rotation of the body around the fastener longitudinal axis, and a second mode affixing the body in place to the support member at a desired rotational orientation. A shroud depends from the body and is sized at a distal end for an operable mating relationship adjacent an arcuate edge of a disc that is rotatable around a disc axis. The shroud distal end is operably disposed a first distance from the fastener longitudinal axis in a direction of a plane including the fastener longitudinal axis and the disc axis. A leading edge of the shroud, with respect to a direction of windage established by disc rotation, is disposed a second distance from the fastener longitudinal axis that is the same or less than the first distance from the fastener longitudinal axis.
