    • A laser beam scanning apparatus includes: a light source unit for emitting a collimated laser light beam; a rotary deflector unit for deflecting a laser light beam from the light source unit; a focusing unit for converting the deflected light beam into a convergent light beam, and for focusing the convergent light beam on a recording medium as a light spot, so that the focused light beam scans the recording medium in a main scanning direction when the rotary deflector unit is rotated; and a beam shape control unit for changing the sectional shape of a laser light beam emitted by the light source unit to a first sectional shape by restricting the laser light beam by using an opening of the beam shape control unit, the opening of the beam shape control unit having a predetermined sectional shape and dimensions, so that a diameter of the light spot on the recording medium is changed to a desired diameter.

    • An electronic blackboard includes a writing sheet movable along a predetermined path and having a plurality of writing sections spaced apart one from another, reading means for optically reading the writing sheet, and recording means for recording information read by the reading means of a recording medium as a hard copy. In one aspect, the image information read by the reading means is subjected to thresholding operation to produce a binary image data, and a standard concentration pattern is provided on the recording sheet and it is used to automatically set a proper threshold level to be used in the thresholding operation. In another aspect, it is so structured that the writing sheet may be stopped with one of the plurality of writing sections in registry with or out of registry with a predetermined window. In a further aspect, the writing sheet is normally moved until the next adjacent writing section comes to be in registry with a predetermined window, but the writing sheet may be moved until its last writing section comes to be in registry with the window when so requested. In a still further aspect, the information written on the writing sheet may be recorded on a copy sheet with the information of one writing section on a copy sheet or with the information of two or more writing sections on a copy sheet.

    • An exhaust reaction chamber assembly is provided for a four-cylinder in-line internal combustion engine having two pairs of exhaust ports, the ports in each pair being closely spaced. The assembly includes an exhaust manifold having two preliminary reaction chambers each connected to receive exhaust gases from one of said pairs of exhaust ports, respectively. A main reaction chamber is provided within the exhaust manifold and two curved passages each connect one of the preliminary reaction chambers to the main reaction chamber, respectively, each passage curving for about 90.degree.. The passages have aligned outlets so that the exhaust gases from each passage are directed toward the other passage. The gases are then directed perpendicular to the inlet in an elongated direction through the main reaction chamber. In one embodiment, the aligned outlets are spaced apart within the main reaction chamber, and in a modification the aligned outlets are formed in a single pipe having a side window opening into the main reaction chamber. A restriction may be placed between each passage and the preliminary reaction chamber to which it is connected, in order to increase residence time.

    • An exhaust port liner for an internal combustion engine is formed of thin wall heat resistant material and is provided with an entrance opening at one side to receive exhaust gases discharged from an engine combustion chamber. A poppet type valve which closes against a stationary seat has a portion which extends through the entrance opening of the liner and also through an aperture in a wall of the liner. This aperture may also receive a portion of the valve stem guide and the liner may be fixed to the valve stem guide in the region of said aperture. The liner has a discharge opening and a support flange supporting the liner encircles the discharge opening. A peripheral layer of heat insulating material may be provided on the liner and this heat insulating material may be confined within a shell forming a part of the liner.
