    • PURPOSE:To prevent an insertion loss, and to obtain an excellent temperature characteristic even when the linear expansion coefficient of a metallic block not matches with that of an optical part. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber 3a connected with the input of a waveguide element 3b and four optical fibers 3c connected with the output of the waveguide element 3b are fixed to quartz supporting tools 2a and 2c. The supporting tools 2a and 2c are housed in super-invar metallic blocks 11a and 11c, and adhered and fixed. A quartz waveguide element 3b is directly housed in a block 11b. Units A, B, and C are formed by polishing the butted end surfaces into curved surfaces. The units A and C are butted to the both end surfaces of the unit B, and an refractive index matching agent is applied between the end surfaces with a clearance S. After aligning the fibers 3a and 3c and the waveguide element 3b, the blocks 11a-11c are welded, and the units are mutually connected. Thus, the blocks are pressurized and welded so that the clearance S between the units formed out of the curved surfaces can be removed, and a compression stress is allowed to remain on an optical axis joint surface, so that the assembly of the module can be finished.
