    • A surgical stapling instrument having a staple fastening assembly including a curved cartridge device. The device has at least one curved open row of staples having a first and second ends and having a concave side and a convex side. Opposite to the cartridge device there is a curved anvil for forming the ends of the staples. The instrument also includes a moving device adapted to move the anvil with respect to the cartridge device in a parallel relationship. The instrument also includes a staple driving device adapted to drive the staples out of the cartridge device towards the anvil, and a knife. The knife has opposing first and second sides and is contained in the cartridge device. There is also a knife actuating device adapted to move the knife towards the anvil. The instrument includes staple fastening assembly having a retaining pin which moves between the cartridge device to align them. The retaining pin is located on the second side of the knife in an intermediate region between the first end and second ends of the curved row of staples.

    • A surgical stapling instrument for performing a circular anastomosis stapling operation is provided. The surgical instrument includes a stapling head assembly mounted by a curved shaft to an actuator handle assembly and incorporates an improved actuator mechanism for transmitting the required operating forces and movements from the actuator handle assembly through the curved shaft to an anvil and staple driver of the stapling head assembly. The stapling head assembly includes a longitudinally movable trocar detachably secured by one or more retainer clips on a hollow shaft of the anvil. When the trocar is retracted, the anvil shaft slides into a central support tube which aligns the anvil axially and circumferentially with a staple holder on the stapling head assembly. The retainer clips are locked against the trocar by the support tube and transmit tension from the trocar to the anvil with no tension load on the anvil shaft. The aotuator mechanism permits adjustment of the anvil gap to produce a desired staple heiqht and precludes actuation of the staple head assembly if the anvil gap is set outside of a predetermined range. Also, the actuator mechanism is adapted to both advance and retract the staple driver relative to the staple holder in the stapling head assembly. Further, an improved arrangement for attaching the support shaft to the stapling head assembly and to the actuator handle assembly is provided.

    • A disposable ligator for applying clamping clips to veins, arteries and blood vessels. The ligator comprises a first handle terminating at its forward end in a first jaw and a second jaw and a second handle, both pivotally mounted on the first handle near the forward end thereof. The handles are shiftable between open and closed positions and shift the jaws between open and closed clip-clamping positions. A clip tube containing a plurality of clips and a spring biased feeder shoe to constantly urge the clips forwardly therein is mounted in the first handle. A pusher is mounted in the first handle parallel to the clip tube in a pusher track which extends to the forward ends of the jaws. The pusher is shiftable by the first and second handles between a retracted position when the handles are closed and an extended position to locate a clip in the pusher track at the forward ends of the jaws when the handles are open. The first handle provides a ramp structure leading to the pusher track at the forward end of the clip tube which is covered by the pusher when in its extended position and exposed by the pusher when in its retracted position, thus enabling the forwardmost clip to be transferred to the pusher track in front of the pusher due to the forward urging of the clips in the clip tube, and without the necessity of moving transfer parts.
