    • 547,096. Wet separating. DORR CO., Inc. Oct. 30, 1940, No. 15875. Convention date, Nov. 7, 1939, [Class 82 (ii)] In the wet separation or classification of solid materials, a stream of liquid containing suspended solids is provided having an horizontal and unobstructed upper surface and in communication with an underlying and substantially static body of liquid, the stream being controlled to cause selected solids to pass downwardly into the underlying body of liquid from which they are removed. The stream flows through a zone or pool of progressively increasing depth controlled by an overflow weir located below the communication with the underlying body of liquid. The upper part of the lower end of a classifying tank 7 provided with reciprocating means such as rakes 8 to remove material therein upwardly is covered by a sloping roof 13 divided into sections 13a, 13b by a transverse slot 26 bounded by a depending lip 38 and a baffle 15 on which is adjustably mounted a partition 41 having an overhanging lip 41A forming a weir. The side walls 16 and an end wall 18 mounted on the tank 7 form with the deck 13 a trough within the upper part of which is fitted, and adjustably mounted therein, a U-shaped trough 35 having an end wall which forms with the well 18 a feed section or trough 17. The lower end of the wall 21 terminates a short distance from the part 13b to form a transverse slot 22 the size of which is adjustable by a gate adjustably mounted on the wall 21, and the base 27 of the trough is provided with an upstanding baffle 37. The upper portion of the sides of the tank 7 extend higher than that of the upper sides of the trough so that a higher liquid level is maintained therein than in the pool in the zone 28 formed between the wall 21 and the weir 41A. In operation, the solids in suspension are fed into the feed section 17 and flow through the opening 22 in a relatively thin sheet, over the baffle 37 and down through the slot 26 into the tank 7. As no opening is provided in the tank, the suspension fills up the latter and forms a pool in the zone 28 bounded by the weir 41A. Further supply of suspension causes the latter to overflow over the weir, only the largest particles passing through the slot 26 into the tank below. The rest of the solids in the suspension pass over the weir 41A and are discharged over a lip 14 at the end of the section 13a. Additional water from a pipe 42 may be supplied to the tank 7 and, as there is no outlet from the latter, causes an upward current of water through the opening 26, thus carrying therewith any small or intermediate-sized particles that have passed through the slot.
