[Also in Group XXVIII] Mechanism converting uniform rotary motion into variable stroke reciprocating motion is shown applied to a duplex pump wherein two rods 23 carrying pump elements 22 are reciprocated by a rocker beam 28 and the beam 28 is linked to a pin 64 which is reciprocated at constant amplitude along a straight line whose orientation may be varied by a handwheel 68 to vary the pump stroke, the pin 64 being driven by a motor 11 through epicyclic gearing wherein a planetary pinion 95, Fig. 4, engages a stationary annulus 54 of twice its diameter. The pinion 95 is integral with a gear 94 driven, through gears 93, 92 on a shaft 82, by a pinion on a shaft 42 geared to the motor 11. A carrier 72-75-74, Fig. 8, is mounted in bearings at each end of the housing 43 and rotatably supports the shaft 42 and planetary shafts 63, 82. The shaft 63 is keyed to the pinion 95 and has a crank arm 65 equal to the radius of the pinion and carrying the pin 64 so that the latter is reciprocated along a diameter of the annulus 54. The annulus has outer teeth 59 engaged by a worm operated by the handwheel 68 to vary the orientation of the line of reciprocation of the pin 64 and thus vary the throw of an arm 31 rocking the beam 28. The orientation is indicated by a scale attached to the annulus 54 and viewed through a window 40. It is stated that the pin 64 may be given something other than straight line movement by changing the length of the crank.
