Hereby a large central flow is obtained through the central part of the passage (17) together with a large peripheral flow through the peripheral parts of the passage (17). This causes small gradients of velocity to appear when the blood flows through the heart valve prosthesis (2) thereby reducing the risk of thrombi and hemolysis formation.

    • A heart valve prosthesis has an annular frame (9) in which is mounted a disk-shaped closing element (10) with an excentrical axis (O-O') of rotation from the closed position to the open one and backward effected by means of a rotation means (11). The latter comprises two support pins (15) provided with cam surfaces (16) intended for rotation of the closing element (10) from its open position to the closed one, and a supporting part (21) which interacts with the closing element (10) in its closed position and is connnected to the frame (1) by means of crosspieces (25). Each of the crosspieces (25) has another supporting part (26) interacting with the closing element (10) in its closed position. The vectors (R21, R26) of reaction forces arising on the supporting parts (21 and 26) are of the same direction which is opposite to the vector of the blood flow head resultant force (F14) applied at the mass centre (23). The fulcrum of the reaction forces (R21 and R26) is situated in one and the same plane and counterbalances the flow head resultant force (F14).

    • A prosthetic mechanical valve includes a base portion defining a through blood flow pathway closed by at least a pair of valve leaflets. The valve leaflets are pivotally carried by the base portion and movable in response to dynamic blood fluid pressures between a first position at which the leaflets close blood flow through the pathway and a second open position allowing blood flow in the pathway. A pair of confronting magnets are carried one to each of the pair of valve leaflets and attract one another. The magnetic forces of attraction between the pair of magnets impart a biasing torque to the valve leaflets which tends to synchronize pivotal movements of the leaflets, cushions their sealing contact, quiets valve operation, and biases the leaflets toward a third partially open position. As a result, under conditions of nearly balanced blood fluid pressures across the pair of valve leaflets they anticipatorily open toward their third position to improve pumping effectiveness. Also, at about the end of a blood pumping stroke, the valve leaflets anticipatorily close from their fully open position toward the third position to reduce regurgitation flow and quiet the valve.

    • This invention comprises a method of using tubular material (200) to replace a heart valve (118, 120, 162) during cardiac surgery. To create a replacement atrioventricular (mitral or tricuspid) valve (120, 160), the tube inlet is sutured to a valve annulus (121, 162) from which the native leaflets have been removed, and the tube outlet is sutured to papillary muscles (126, 128, 170) in the ventricle (112, 152). To create a semilunar (aortic or pulmonary) valve (118), the tube inlet is sutured to an annulus from which the native cusps have been removed, and the tube is either "tacked" at three points distally inside the artery, or sutured longitudinally along three lines; this allows the flaps of tissue between the three fixation points at the valve outlet to function as movable cusps. These approaches generate flow patterns that closely duplicate the flow patterns of native valves. A preferred tubular material (200) comprises submucosal tissue from the small intestine; this can be taken from the same patient who is undergoing the cardiac operation, to reduce antigenicity. Animal or cadaver intestinal tissue can also be used if properly treated, or a biocompatible synthetic tubular material can be used. This invention also discloses a properly treated intestinal tissue segment or synthetic tubular segment (500) suitable for implantation as a replacement heart valve, enclosed in a sealed sterile package (510).
