    • An instrument for everting an end of a vessel. The instrument has a tubular member having an axial bore, a distal end and a proximal end. The instrument further also has an elastic membrane sealably mounted on the distal end of the tubular member, a plunger slidably mounted within the axial bore of the body, a spring operationally engaged to the plunger for biasing the plunger in the distal direction and distending the membrane for insertion into the vessel, a distally extending mandrel mounted to the plunger, a sleeve slidably mounted over the membrane and at least a portion of the tubular member, and a proximal seal mounted in the proximal end of the axial bore so that the membrane, the proximal seal, and the axial bore define a sealed chamber. The instrument further comprises a pressure source for pressurizing the sealed chamber to expand the membrane into an expanded configuration, the sleeve limiting radial expansion of the membrane, and for depressurizing the sealed chamber to collapse the membrane into a collapsed configuration.

    • A retrieval device or snare for grasping foreign articles and retrieving them from the body of a patient. The retrieval device includes a catheter open at both ends such that it may be advanced along a guidewire. The distal end of a wire is attached to the first catheter near an opening system within the catheter. The opening system may be a slot or a pair of holes. A portion of the wire is oriented external of the catheter. Manipulation of the proximal end of the wire causes a portion of the wire to form a loop external of the catheter. The catheter may be tapered, as may be the wire. A reinforcing- material may be attached to the portion of the wire that forms the loop. Another reinforcing material may also be attached to the proximal portion of the wire in order to stiffen the wire and improve its pushability. A guidewire may be inserted into a patient and maneuvered to an appropriate location within the patient, the catheter may be advanced over the guidewire, the wire attached to the catheter may be manipulated to capture a foreign body with the loop, and the catheter and foreign body may be withdrawn from the patient.

    • A method of transplanting a graft in the subretinal area of a host eye comprises preparing the graft by harvesting from the donor tissue a population of cells in a manner that maintains the population of cells in the same organization and cellular polarity as is present in normal tissue of that type. The population of cells are of a sheet-like form and are assembled with a relatively thin flexible pliable carrier composed of a non-toxic flexible composition which substantially dissolves at body temperature to form a graft. The graft is sufficiently flexible and pliable to be coiled to form a volute without disturbing the organization and polarity of the cells. The method further comprises coiling the graft to form a volute with the convolutions of the volute free of one another for subsequent uncoiling of the graft substantially to its original sheet-like form. An incision is made in the host eye for insertion of the volute. The incision in the eye is smaller than the incision that would be required for insertion of the graft in its uncoiled sheet-like form. The volute is inserted one end first into the host eye through the incision and transported to a position between the retina and the underlying tissue. The volute uncoils after its insertion to lie in sheet-like form between the retina and the underlying tissue of the host eye. The incision is then closed.

    • A gastric banding device for implantation within a person for the treatment of morbid obesity. The gastric banding device includes an inflatable band portion dimensioned to encircle the stomach and an inflation conduit operable for conducting a percutaneously injected inflation fluid into the band portion. The band portion is a toroidal member having a head end with first fastening means thereon and a tail end having second fastening means thereon and an inflatable shell therebetween. The outer surface of the toroidal shell in reinforced with a non-extensible, biocompatible material which serves to limit outward expansion of the shell when an inflation fluid is injected thereinto. The inner, stomach-contacting surface of the shell has a layer of an open-cell elastomeric foam affixed thereto and integral therewith. In operation, when the band is placed in an encircling relationship with the stomach, the first and second fastening means on the ends of the shell are engaged in locking relationship. An inflation fluid is injected into the shell by means of a subcutaneously implanted injection port that is in fluid communication with the inflation conduit. As the shell expands inwardly, it constricts and compartmentalizes the stomach. The rough textured, open-cell, stomach-contacting layer on the interior surface of the shell prevents post-implantation migration of the shell. The open-cell layer obviates the need for suturing the stomach to prevent slippage of the banding device.
