    • A plurality of private address spaces where private addresses may possibly overlap are connected with a global address space. Respective private address spaces possess VLAN-IDs as identification information for VLANs. When connecting the respective private address spaces with the Internet, a duplicate network address translating device performs, with VLAN-ID and the private address of the respective private address spaces in pairs, mutual translation between the private address and global address of the Internet. A duplicate addresses-handling server is provided with a routing table which shows the relationship between virtual interfaces corresponding to VLAN-IDs and addresses of the respective private address spaces. A server portion of the duplicate addresses-handling server records, if a request is made from apparatuses of a private address space, the request and VLAN-ID, refers to, if making a response thereto, the routing table, selects a virtual interface which corresponds to the address of the response receiver, and makes a response. A virtual interface processing portion gives an applicable VLAN-ID and carries out an output to a switching hub.

    • A variable stroke engine includes: a connecting rod connected at one end to a piston through a piston pin; a subsidiary arm turnably connected at one end to the other end of the connecting rod and connected to a crankshaft through a crankpin; and a control rod connected at one end to the subsidiary arm at a position displaced from a connection position of the connecting rod; a support position of the other end of the control rod being capable of being displaced in a plane perpendicular to an axis of the crankshaft. In the variable stroke engine, a switchover means switches over: a state in which a high expansion stroke is provided such that the stroke of the piston in an expansion stroke is larger than that in a compression stroke when an engine load is high; and a state in which a constant compression ratio is provided when the engine load is low. Thus, a reduction in fuel consumption is achieved irrespective of the level of an engine load, while putting a high value on a reduction in fuel consumption in a state in which the engine load is low.

    • In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a multi-port bridge where problems in conventional virtual bridging are solved, and especially a multi-port bridge which can be managed with a program that manages only two-port bridges. The multi-port bridge comprises, in terms of hardware, one adapter such a TRN adapter 70 connected to one port 50, other adapters such as other ISDN adapters 71 to 77 connected to a plurality of other ports 51 to 57, and processor 86 for providing virtual bridges and a virtual Token-Ring between one adapter and other adapters. Processor 86 provides by means of a program a virtual bridge module 120 having a bridging function to TRN adapter 70 connected to one port 50, and virtual bridge modules 121 to 127 having a bridging function to other ISDN adapters 71 to 77 connected to ports 51 to 57, respectively. Further, processor 86 provides by means of the program virtual Token-Ring module 128 for coupling these virtual bridge modules 121 to 127.

    • A system and method for a run-time type error in a program prior to running the program whose source code is written in a programming language with imperative constructs and polymorphic procedures is disclosed. To accomplish the above type error checking, the source code is translated into intermediate form representations by an intermediate form translator. In addition to the intermediate form representations, type representations which include predetermined types such as a locking type constructor and an unlocking type constructor are utilized in detecting the run-time type error. When both intermediate form representations and the type representations are used and the source code is determined to have no run-time type error prior to running the program according to the current invention, it is guaranteed that the program will run without any run-time type error.
