    • A medical extravasation device has an electrode patch that can attach to the skin for sensing electrical information. Tissue impedance is calculated from the electrode patch signals. The patch has elongate pick-up electrodes inboard of elongate energizing electrodes. The measuring zone determined by the elongate space between the pick-up electrodes enhances sensitivity and specificity. The presence of an extravasation is determined by interpreting the tissue impedance measurement. The method for determining the extravasation includes a first step of determining a pre-injection baseline measurement of the tissue impedance. Then, the tissue impedance is monitored during the procedure itself. A predetermined amount of change in tissue impedance is determined to indicate an extravasation.

    • A liquid transfer device including a holder for a pipette array. A flexible preformed membrane having cups is over the proximal openings of the pipettes and sandwiched therebetween with a housing with the cups extending into the proximal openings of the pipettes. A vacuum drawn in the housing everts the membrane from the proximal openings thereby creating reduced pressure in the pipettes which when their distal ends are immersed in a liquid will draw up some of the liquid into the pipettes in substantially equal amounts. In one embodiment a movable abutment is provided to control the upward travel of the everting membrane and thereby the amount of liquid drawn into the pipettes. A method for fabricating the preformed membrane is also shown.

    • Devices, systems and methods for fixation of medical articles which remain in a patient's body for a period of time are provided. The articles may be secured to the patient's skin by use of a device having an arcuate channel for holding the medical article. In one device, a base member including an arcuate channel receives the medical article, which base member has a plurality of protrusions which rest against the skin providing a gap for application of a polymerizable adhesive composition which polymerizes, forming a seal around the medical article and securing the medical article to the body. Alternatively, a device including a base member having an arcuate channel is provided adhered to a flexible member. The device receives the medical article and is positioned proximate to the patient's skin. Polymerizable adhesive composition is applied to the flexible member, securing the medical article to the patient's body upon polymerization.

    • An improved tissue engagement device such as a suction stabilizer or retractor. The stabilizer or retractor is provided with one or more suction pods mounted to the distal end of a flexible arm. The flexible arm is coupled to a base assembly, which attaches the arm to an associated retractor or other structure that is fixedly located relative to the operative site. The base assembly includes a fixed portion, which is coupled to the retractor or other fixed mounting point and a rotatable turret, allowing rotation of the arm relative to the fixed portion of the base assembly. A tensioning mechanism mounted to the turret applies tension to compress the turret around a corresponding pivot mounted to the fixed portion of the base to rotationally lock the turret and to lock the arm in its current configuration. If the device is a suction stabilizer, it may carry a spreading/tightening mechanism along with two suction pods and the tensioning mechanism may lock the relative location of the spreading/tightening mechanism relative to the arm and operate to spread the suction pods apart from one another to provide for additional stabilization at the desired anastomosis site. If the device is a suction retractor, the tensioning mechanism may lock a pivotably mounted carrier for a single enlarged suction pod so that the suction pod is held in its desired orientation relative to the arm.
