    • A cruise control system for maintaining the speed of a vehicle at a fixed, set speed, comprising an actuator including an electric motor which actuates a speed control member via an electromagnetic clutch. To ensure the capability of the cruise control system to decelerate the vehicle even when it is traveling a steep and long downhill, and the normal operation of the cruise control system becomes inadequate for curbing the excessive increase of the vehicle speed, the electromagnetic clutch is disengaged whereby the speed control member is returned to the position for maximum deceleration. Since the operation of the cruise control system is not canceled even when the vehicle speed is increased substantially beyond the set speed, the cruise control system can readily return to its normal operation even after the vehicle is accelerated from the state of cruise control by stepping on the accelerator pedal, for instance for passing another car. To avoid frequent activation of the electromagnetic clutch, there may be defined an intermediate speed range in which a boosted deceleration signal is supplied to the electric motor for a deceleration action which is more boosted than a normal deceleration signal.

    • An apparatus for sensing the concentration of oxygen in a gas such as engine exhaust gas includes an oxygen concentration sensor formed of an oxygen pump element and a sensor cell element, each based on a solid electrolytic member formed of a material such as ZrO.sub.2, and is provided with a limiter circuit which functions to reduce the level of current supplied to the oxygen pump element when a voltage produced by the sensor cell element indicates that this current level is such as to produce a "blackening" phenomenon whereby deterioration of the oxygen pump element will occur and oxygen concentration sensing reliability will be lowered. The apparatus also includes a delay circuit which functions such that a reduction of the oxygen pump element current level is delayed by a predetermined time interval, after an increase of the sensor cell element voltage to the "blanking" region is detected, thereby preventing fluctuations in the oxygen pump element current level due to transient increases in sensor cell element voltage and increasing the sensing reliability.

    • An idling speed control system for controlling idling rotational speed of an internal combustion engine. A vacuum-operated actuator having a diaphragm defining a vacuum chamber controls opening and closing of a throttle valve in an intake passage of the engine in response to first and second control pressures supplied from a change-over control valve to the vacuum chamber. An electronic control unit generates an on-off control pulse signal having a period corresponding to the rotational speed of the engine, one of on-period and off-period of the on-off control pulse signal having a predetermined constant value, and supplies the change-over control valve with the on-off control pulse signal, in response to which the change-over control valve supplies the vacuum chamber of the vacuum-operated actuator, selectively, with the first control pressure and the second control pressure, determines the engine rotational speed and a rate of decrease in the engine rotational speed, and halts the control for a predetermined period of time when the determined engine rotational speed falls within a predetermined range and at the same time the determined rate of decrease in the engine rotational speeds falls within a predetermined range.

    • An oxygen concentration sensing device for use in an air-fuel ratio control system of an internal combustion engine includes a pair of solid electrolyte members having oxygen ion permeability which are disposed in the exhaust gas of the engine and arranged to face each other forming a predetermined gap portion between them. Each of the solid electrolyte members is provided with a pair of electrodes. One of the solid electrolyte members is operative as an oxygen pump element when a predetermined constant electric current is supplied across the electrodes thereof. An electric potential developed across the electrodes of the other one of the solid electrolyte members operative as a cell element is supplied to a comparing means in which the input signal from the solid electrolyte member is compared with a predetermined reference potential and a result of comparison is provided as an oxygen concentration detection signal. In an application of the oxygen concentration sensing device according to the invention in an air-fuel ratio control system, the magnitude of the constant current supplied to the oxygen pump element is varied with the value of a target air-fuel ratio which is controlled in response to various operational parameters of the engine.

    • A vacuum-operated actuator controls opening and closing of a throttle valve in an intake passage of an internal combustion engine in response to pressure in a vacuum chamber thereof. A change-over control valve supplies the vacuum chamber, selectively, with first and second control pressures for opening and closing the throttle valve, respectively. An electronic control unit controls the engine idling rotational speed by generating an on-off control pulse signal having a period corresponding to the engine rotational speed, and supplying the change-over control valve with the on-off control pulse signal to cause same to supply the vacuum chamber with the first or second control pressure. The electronic control unit determines the engine rotational speed and a rate of decrease in the engine rotational speed, and halts the idling speed control for a predetermined period of time when the determined engine rotational speed falls within a predetermined range and at the same time the determined rate of decrease falls within a predetermined range. A valve opening-correcting device corrects the throttle valve opening to a larger opening in response to at least one predetermined external load applied on the engine. The electronic control unit actuates the valve opening-correcting device to increase the throttle valve opening which is determined by the change-over control valve in response to the on-off control pulse signal.
