摘要： PURPOSE:In the production of parent materials for optical fiber through the rod-in-tube process, a conjugated parent material is fused and contracted in diameter into cone shapes on both ends to form a parent material resistant to cracking. CONSTITUTION:A parent material for optical fiber 1 is inserted into a quartz glass tube 2 to form a conjugated parent material and it is heated with the heat source to fuse into a integral form 3. The above integral form 3 is easily crushable on both ends, when it is cooled by standing, and so the both ends 31 of the integral form 3 are heated up to 1,400-1,800 deg.C to contract the diameter or heated over about 2,000 deg.C till being cut by fusing on both ends 31, then cooled by standing.

摘要： PURPOSE:In the production of parent material for optical fiber through the VAD process, a part of glass starting materials is blown out of the sub-burner which is set on the side of the parent material to control its outer diameter and refractive index distribution. CONSTITUTION:Glass starting materials and refractive index-controlling materials such as SiCl4, O2, H2, GeCl4, BBr3, POCl3 and other compounds are jetted from the oxyhydrogen flame burner to effect flame hydrolysis and the resultant glass particles are deposited on the support rod 2 to give the parent material rod for optical fiber. In this process, a burner for adjustment 5 is set on the side of the parent material 3 to blow a prescribed amount of glass forming and refractive index controlling materials (preferably the amount is about less than 1/10 at the oxyhydrogen flame burner).

摘要： PURPOSE:Among gases for forming the clad which is fed from the outer opening of the multiply tube burner, the flow rate of SiCl4 is varied to control the thickness of the clad easily without disturbance in refractive index distribution. CONSTITUTION:In the vessel 20 (24 is inlet for the atmosphere gas and 25 is the outlet), the starting material 22 is pulled up under rotation and the flame of the material gas is blown to the material 22 from the burner 21 set at the bottom of the vessel 20. The formed glass fine particles are deposited on the material 22 to form aggregation 26, which is sintered with the heating furnace 23 to form a clear glass. The above burner has a multiply tube structure and the starting gas for forming the core (containing SiCl4, GeCl4) is fed from the center opening 31, the gas for forming the clad (H2, SiCl4) from the opening 32, an inert gas from the opening 33 and the burning support gas from the opening 34. At this time, flow rate of SiCl4 among the gas components from the opening 32 is varied to control the thickness of the clad.

摘要： PURPOSE:In the production of a parent material for optical fiber through the VAD process, the sintering is carried out in a specific gas atmosphere to form the parent material with less deviation in refractive index distribution. CONSTITUTION:In the reaction vessel 30, starting gas materials are burnt with the burner 31 and the resultant glass fine particles are deposited on the starting material 32 which is being pulled up under rotation to form the fine particle aggregate 36 (its bulk density is about 0.1-0.5g/cm and the refractive index is lower in the outer part than in the core part). Then, the aggregate is sintered with the heater 33 in the course of pulling-up to give the objective parent material for glass fiber wherein the sintering is carried out in such a gas atmosphere as containing halogen or a halogen compound and effecting dehydration and dopant vaporization, e.g., a helium gas containing about 0.1-10mol% of molecular chlorine.

摘要： PURPOSE:To prepare a transparent glass base material for optical fibers having an optimal refractive index distribution, by distributing the bulk density of fine glass particles from the central part to the peripheral part of a porous base material in the form of a pseudo-parabola in forming the porous base material. CONSTITUTION:A raw material gas and a fuel gas are subjected to the hydrolytic or thermal oxidation reaction by a synthetic burner, and the synthesized fine glass particles are stuck to and deposited on the lower part of a starting base material to form a porous base material. In the process, the porous base material is heated to give such a temperature distribution as to be high in the central part and low in the peripheral part thereof, and the bulk density of the fine glass particles is distributed from the central part to the peripheral part of the porous base material in the form of a pseudo-parabola. The resultant base material is then heated and sintered at about 1,450-1,700 deg.C to give a transparent glass base material having improved refractive index distribution.

摘要： PURPOSE:To make it possible to synthesize a base material at a high speed and stably without bringing the tip of a burner nozzle close to the deposition surface of the base material, by means of a combustion tube provided at the tip of the burner body used in the VAD method. CONSTITUTION:A burner body 1 constituted of a nozzle 2 for supplying a raw material for forming glass at the center, a nozzle 3 for supplying a combustible gas and a nozzle 4 for supplying a combustion improving gas in the order in the form of a multiple pipe. The nozzle 4 is equipped with a nozzle 5 for the axial flow of the combustion improving gas and a nozzle 6 for the turning flow of the combustion improving gas. The tip of the burner body 1 is engaged with a combustion tube 7, and the raw material for forming glass, the combustible gas, e.g. H2, and the combustion improving gas, e.g. O2, are supplied to the respective nozzles 2, 3 and 4 to burn the combustible gas, hydrolyze the raw material for the glass by the flame and form fine glass particles 8. In the process, the combustion tube 7 provided at the tip of the burner body 1 causes no fluctuation of the flame, etc., and the formed fine particles 8 pass through almost te center of the tube 7 and jetted to the desired position accurately.

摘要： PURPOSE:To artificialy set a refractive index distribution in a vapor phase axially sticking method by applying mechanical vibration to a burner for forming glass fine particles. CONSTITUTION:In place of a conventional method for controlling a refractive index distribution using a differnce between starting material gases in the reaction rate and a diffference between laminate surfaces in the temp. distribution, a distribution difference is formed artificially. Parameter alpha (the equation) of alpha distribution used by Mr. Gloge et al. is considered as a method for quantitatively expressing a refractive index distribution. Mechanical vibration is applied to a burner to set the distribution so that alpha is made larger as compared to the case of a fixed burner. As the amplitude of the vibration is widened, alpha becomes larger and can be set at a desired value. For example, when a preform having large alpha is manufactured to enhance the coupling efficiency to a light source, this method is applied.

Thus, jacket glass fine powder can be grown on clad glass fine powder before the surface temp. of the clad glass fine powder lowers slightly, thereby producing a porous preform with little difference in bulk density. In the vicinity of growing surface 160 of core glass fine powder and growing surface 162 of clad glass fine powder, core-clad exhaust pipe 18 with one end open is set. In the vicinity of growing surface 164 of jacket glass fine powder, jacket exhaust pipe 20 with one end open is separately set.
