    • An apparatus and methods for a card that allows a cardholder to set up auto-charge payment of dues and fees to a series of clubs, merchants or service providers. The card also may be used for other transactions that accept credit cards. The apparatus includes a database containing information of the associated clubs, merchants and service providers, so that applicants and cardholders can easily configure auto-charging for multiple business concerns in one sitting. The apparatus may process auto-charge transactions in an automated fashion without requiring a cardholder to submit payment authorization or the business concern to submit a charge for each payment. Inconvenience and administrative costs to the cardholder and the business concern are reduced. The system and method provide a competitive advantage to the associated business concerns to secure the initial account and then to maintain it. The system and method encourages card loyalty of both the card members and the business concerns to the card provider.

    • A multi-mode radio module (22) comprises a terminal (11) for connection to an antenna (10). A transmitting branch (DCS/PCS) and a branching circuit are coupled to the terminal (11). The branching circuit comprises at least a first and a second branch for receiving signals in first and second frequency bands (DCS, PCS), respectively. Each of the first and second branches comprise, respectively, a phase shifting circuit (PS1, PS2), a BAW or SAW band pass filter (RXF2, RXF3) coupled to the phase shifting circuit, the bandwidth of the filter being selected to pass a wanted signal in one of the first and second frequency bands but reject an unwanted signal in the other of the second and first frequency bands, and a low noise amplifier (LNA2, LNA3) coupled to an output of the band pass filter. The response of each of the band pass filters (RXF2, RXF3) is phase shifted to present an open circuit at the wanted frequency in the other branch. Each of the phase shifting circuits (PS1, PS2) is impedance transforming so that higher impedance filters can be used.

    • An antenna arrangement comprises a ground conductor (302) incorporating two slots (304a,304b) having an electrically small separation and means (308a,308b) for coupling a transceiver to each slot to enable the ground conductor to function as two substantially independent antennas. Such a device enables efficient diversity performance to be obtained from a significantly smaller volume than known antenna arrangements. In one embodiment the ground conductor, slots and transceiver are integrated in a module (206) adapted for connection to a further ground conductor which provides the majority of the antenna area. The further conductor would typically be a printed circuit board ground plane or mobile phone handset. Matching and broadbanding circuitry may conveniently be incorporated in the module. By varying the area of the connections between the module and the further ground conductor, the resonant frequencies of the slots can be modified.

    • One embodiment of the present invention facilitates efficient metering in a packet network environment by providing a single metering message, which contains sufficient information to provide the complete call tariff model for a particular call. The media gateway receiving the message can analyze the information provided in the message to determine how to provide metering pulses for all phases of the call, as well as any one-time charges, such as setup and add-on charges. Another embodiment of the invention provides a way for handling fractional pulse counts in an efficient manner. Yet another embodiment facilitates the handling of situations where charge intervals do not divide evenly into the phase duration of the phase associated with the call. In still another embodiment, the amount of information necessary to deliver the parameters of the call tariff model is minimized to reduce the overhead necessary for facilitating the metering process.
