    • A novel strategy for monitoring the location of a transgene in a mammal is disclosed. A sodium iodide symporter is genetically fused to either the N-terminus or C-terminus of the product of a transgene through a linker peptide which bears the recognition sequence of a host cell protease. Expression of the transgene confers the activity of the sodium iodide symporter (NIS) to a host cell which expresses the transgene. Subsequent administration of labeled iodine results in transport of the labeled iodine into the cell bearing the NIS, which can then be localized and measured using standard imaging techniques. The system is particularly useful for monitoring the location of therapeutic transgenes and tissue-specific distribution of the therapeutic gene product.

    • A technique for managing storage of a data object in a storage device involves receiving the data object (A) to store in the storage device, where the data object has an indicator bit pattern (P). Successive compression data transformations are applied to data object A to obtain respective corresponding compressed data objects, and one of these compressed data objects is selected, such that the selected compressed data object (C) has the shortest length with respect to the remaining compressed data objects. Compression information (I) is then associated with the compression data transformation used to generate data object C, and a threshold value T is calculated at least partly from the length of compression information I.     • Methods and apparatus, including computer program products, for rasterizing digital graphics objects having a stacking order. One method includes rasterizing the graphics objects by marking pixels in a pixel array, where each graphics object is separately rasterized according to a processing sequence that follows the stacking order from top to bottom; and, during the rasterization, tracking which pixels have been marked. Tracking which pixels have been marked can include using at least one tracking list that is associated with a scan line defining a sequence of pixels in a pixel array and that identifies marked or unmarked segments in the scan line. Rasterizing the graphics objects can include using the tracking list to identify markable pixels in the pixel array and marking only those pixels that are markable according to the tracking list. Marking pixels can include assigning any graphical attribute of a graphics object to the pixels.
