摘要： A look up engine 200 comprising a storage means 212a, 212b for storing a plurality of entries, each entry comprising a value and an associated key value, such that, in operation, a look up is carried out by outputing a value which is associated with the stored key value which matches an input key value. The look up engine 200 comprises a plurality of look up state machines 206a, 206b, 206c, 206d connected in parallel to enable multiple look ups to be carried out concurrently. Each entry comprises an associated skip value, if the skipped bits of the input key value and the associated skip value mismatches, an error message is output to indicate lookup failure. The entries may be stored in a trie format which is constructed by identifying overlapping ranges between the plurality of entries; splitting the identified overlapping ranges; storing the plurality of entries within a trie structure.

In a scalable data processing architecture described (Fig 6) the elements are identical and are arranged in a cluster to provide, multi-threaded, parallel processing. They all execute a single instruction stream, have their own embedded memories, are able to make independent data-driven decisions and may be assisted by specialised, pipelined, hardware engines for table lookup and other functions.

摘要： Shading values in a graphics processing system are determined by using approximation techniques. For example, where a Beckmann Distribution Function (BDF) is used, the shading values are determined by reformulating the BDF in terms of the scalar product of the surface normal and the viewpoint-light half-vector to produce a modified BDF. A portion of the BDF is divided into a plurality of intervals, each defined by first and second control points at its boundaries. Each interval is then approximated using a cubic approximation to produce coefficients for use in determining the shading values. In alternative embodiments, other functions are approximated.

摘要： A function between a first set of data (a to h etc) and a succession of second sets of data (A to H etc) from an image frame is evaluated. Evaluating means (75, 76) for evaluating data items in the first set with data items in corresponding positions in a succession of second data sets; characterised by a plurality of evaluating means for simultaneously evaluating a data item in the first data set with a corresponding data item in each of n second data sets in the succession, and local memory means (71 to 73) for retaining at least one of the corresponding data items in a second data set, whereby the retained data item is reused in an evaluation of the next data item in the first data set with n data items in corresponding positions in at least the next second data set in the succession. The method avoids having to re-fetch the same data for successive operations. The results are accumulated (77, 78). The technique may perform a convolution between the data sets to emulate a filter or perform an effect (eg a blur or sharpen) or may be used as a video compression process to search for a block of image data in an image frame so as to encode a subsequent frame by reference to the closeness of the match and the offset of the matching block.
