    • Methods and systems for distributing I/O requests from a computer system to a storage system over multiple paths having non-homogeneous transfer speeds. A large I/O request is partitioned into a plurality of smaller I/O operations between a computer system and a storage system. The I/O operations are distributed over a plurality of communication paths coupling the computer system and the storage system. The distribution attempts to balance the load over the multiple paths based on the transfer speed of each path. In one embodiment, operations are distributed only to the highest speed paths presently operable. In another embodiment, an estimated completion time for an operation is determined for each path and a path with the lowest estimated completion time is selected to transfer the next operation.

    • Write elements are discussed having a write pole and an associated trailing shield. A leading side of the trailing shield faces a trailing side of the write pole. The leading side of the trailing shield has a shape such that a center portion of the leading side has less of a separation from the trailing side of the write pole than track edge portions of the leading side of the trailing shield. An exemplary shape the leading side of the trailing shield may be a convex shape when viewed from the ABS. The shape of the leading side of the trailing shield causes the trailing shield to shunt less of the magnetic field from the trailing side of the write pole at the track edges so that the written transition at the track edge will not lag behind the written transition at the track center allowing for a straighter transition.

    • Systems and methods are disclosed for selecting a preferred foreign wireless network from a plurality foreign wireless networks. One embodiment of the invention comprises a home wireless network that includes an HLR and a managed roaming system coupled between the HLR and a plurality of foreign wireless networks. The managed roaming system receives registration messages for roaming subscribers being transmitted from the foreign wireless networks to the HLR. The managed roaming system monitors the number of registration messages received from the foreign wireless networks and forwards the registration messages to the HLR. The managed roaming system selects a preferred foreign wireless network based on the number of registration messages received from the foreign wireless networks over a time period. The managed roaming system then forwards subsequent registration messages from the preferred foreign wireless network to the HLR, and blocks registration messages from non-preferred foreign wireless networks.
