The automatic gain control is positioned upstream of the manual gain control.     • A method and apparatus are disclosed for performing a reduction of the data rate of a data stream for transmission through a transmission channel or recording and for subsequently reconstructing the original data stream upon receipt or during reproducing. The method and apparatus utilizes a combination of two processes, one of which eliminates or drops digital samples from the data stream to reduce the data rate for transmission and which subsequently reconstructs the original data stream using the unaltered and recovered digital samples to generate an interpolated value for each of the samples that had been dropped. The second process utilizes differential pulse code modulation for reducing the number of data bits per sample before sending the data stream through the transmission channel and for subsequently restoring the data to its original multi-bit form.

    • A chroma amplifier and color killer are described for use in a color television receiver. In a preferred embodiment, the chroma amplifier comprises a first pair of emitter-coupled transistors receiving a current source which has a D.C. operating component and an A.C. chroma signal component. A second pair of emitter-coupled transistors receives another current source which has only a D.C. operating component substantially equal to that received by the first pair of transistors. A variable ACC voltage and a substantially fixed bias voltage are applied to selected base terminals of the transistors such that one of the first pairs of transistors develops a gain controlled A.C. chroma signal output and one of the second pair of transistors develops an ACC-varied D.C. output signal free of chroma component. The latter signal drives a low power color killer for quenching color reproduction when the color component of the broadcast signal is missing or is of very low amplitude.

    • A color eliminating circuit comprises a killer detection circuit, a band amplifier circuit and a control circuit. The killer detection circuit detects a color burst signal in a chromatic signal applied to an input thereof, and delivers a killer output voltage to the band amplifier circuit. When the killer output voltage is higher than a predetermined operating voltage of the band amplifier circuit, the band amplifier circuit amplifies the chromatic signal supplied thereto; when the killer voltage is lower than the operating voltage, the band amplifier circuit does not amplify the chromatic signal. The control circuit provides a gate pulse for the detection of the color burst signal, which pulse is applied to a further input of the killer detection circuit. When the killer voltage is below the operating voltage of the band amplifier circuit, the control circuit interrupts the provision of the gate pulse, to prevent the killer voltage from being supplied from the killer detection circuit. Thus, where the field strength of received signals is extremely low, an increase in the killer voltage due to noise, which might inadvertently operate the band amplifier circuit, is avoided.
