    • A method of recording and reproducing a video signal with respect to a magnetic tape includes the steps of converting the video signal into digital form; distributing the digitized video signal to a plurality of channels; simultaneously recording the digitized video signal in eight parallel tracks extending obliquely on the tape without guard bands therebetween and with the digitized video signal in alternate ones of the tracks being recorded with a first azimuth angle and the digitized video signal in the remaining tracks being recorded with a second different azimuth angle; reproducing the digitized video signal from the eight parallel tracks; grouping the reproduced digitized video signal into two groups, one group including only those portions of the reproduced digitized video signal that were recorded with the first azimuth angle, and the other group including only those portions of the reproduced digitized video signal that were recorded with the second azimuth angle; and processing the reproduced digitized video signal separately for each group. Apparatus for performing the above method is also provided.

    • A control network and method for a color television receiver is described for enabling and disabling the limiting action of a conventional ACL (Automatic Color Limiter) circuit, for varying the threshold at which a color killer circuit inhibits reproduction of color images, or for effecting both functions simultaneously. In the preferred embodiment, the control network includes a two-position switch by which the viewer can either increase or decrease the value of a reference signal to thereby control the degree of amplification of a received color signal. An amplifier is responsive to a reduction in the amplitude of the reference signal for substantially disabling the limiting action of the ACL circuit and for causing the color killer to inhibit reproduction of color images when a relatively small amplitude color signal is received. When operation of the switch increases the amplitude of the reference signal, the amplifier responds by enabling the limiting action of the ACL circuit and causing the color killer to inhibit reproduction of color images when a relatively larger amplitude color signal is received.

    • In apparatus for reproducing a signal recorded on a magnetic tape or other record medium and which includes a signal band containing an information signal, such as the chrominance component of a color video signal, and a reference signal of a predetermined frequency occurring only during spaced intervals, such as, the burst signal; the mentioned band of the reproduced signal is applied to a variable gain amplifier for controlling the level of the chrominance component, a burst gate receives the level-controlled output of the amplifier and is gated during the intervals of the burst signal to provide an output during each such interval, a crystal filter tuned to the frequency of the burst signal receives the output of the burst gate so as to pass only the burst signal, and the gain of the variable gain amplifier is controlled in accordance with the combined levels of the outputs of the burst gate and the crystal filter, respectively. In providing the gain control signal for the variable gain amplifier, the outputs of the burst gate and crystal filter may be both level detected and the resulting D.C. voltages then added to provide the gain control signal, or only one of such outputs may be level detected and added to the other output to provide an added signal which is then level detected to provide the gain control signal. The combined levels of the outputs of the burst gate and the crystal filter are also preferably employed to control a color killer circuit in the reproducing apparatus.

    • A synchronizing circuit arrangement for a television receiver having an oscillator which generates a clock signal the frequency of which is substantially higher than the line frequency and having a frequency dividing circuit which derives signals of the line frequency from the clock frequency by means of division. During a predetermined number of line periods a phase comparison stage determines the average value of the phase deviation between the received line synchronizing signal and a reference signal of the line frequency and applies the value obtained to a preset stage for adjusting in a subsequent time interval, for example one line period during the field blanking interval, the divisor by which the frequency dividing circuit divides the clock frequency. The clock frequency may be a multiple of the chrominance subcarrier frequency, in which case the oscillator is continuously readjusted by the phase comparison stage when the color killer circuit is operative, while the divisor is not changed.

    • DC control signals responsive to ACC voltages are applied to a color signal amplifier, to which recording and reproducing color signals are applied, to control the operation of the color signal amplifier to recording or reproducing mode. Such control is attained by using color killer signal responsive to mode changeover and ACC detector signals which serve to assign the color signal amplifier to recording or reproducing mode. Color signals are obtained from the output terminal of the color signal amplifier in both modes. In the case of recording mode, essentially undesirable recording color signals appearing to the output terminal of the color signal amplifier are by-passed by a low-pass filter, and only ACC detector voltages which are used as color killer signals are supplied to a mixer circuit which mixes brightness and color signals to generate composite color signals to be recorded. This recording signal mixer circuit serves to restrain, if necessary, low frequency converted color signals from being supplied from the recording signal mixer circuit to a recording head responsive to color killer signals. In the case of reproducing mode, color signals appearing to the output terminal of the color signal amplifier are supplied to a reproducing mixer which composes composite color signals to be reproduced from brightness and color signals to be reproduced. Input signals to the color signal amplifier are treated at the time of recording mode in such a way that color killer voltages are superposed on essentially undesirable recording color signals to extract only color killer voltages on the output terminal side of the color amplifier, thus allowing the circuit, which functions as the color amplifier at the time or reproducing mode, to serve as the circuit for treating color killer signals at the time of recording mode, or making the function of the single circuit different in reproducing and recording modes.
