    • A method is provided for managing animals (10) in a milking system which comprises a milking stall (11) provided with a milking apparatus (13) for milking the animals, a gate arrangement (18a-b; 18a-b, 32; 55a-b) allowing the animals to enter said milking stall, one at a time, from at least two different locations, and a control device (15) which holds and updates a milking suitability index for each of the animals. According to the method a first animal is identified and received at a first location, and a milking suitability index for the first animal is retrieved. A second animal is identified and received at a second location, and a milking suitability index for the second animal is retrieved. The milking suitability indexes for the first and second animals are compared and an animal at either one of said first and second locations is allowed to enter the milking stall depending on the outcome of the comparison.

    • An identification system, especially for identifying small animals that are carrying ID-transponders is disclosed. The system id comprised of a hanger that is installed above the track where an animal is passing or being passed; a flexible sheet that is handed down from the hanger and while passing through the track the animal pushes the flexible sheet in a way that the flexible sheet touches the animal or at least the animal passes near the flexible sheet; an antenna that is installed in the flexible sheet; a transceiver that is using the antenna to communicate with an ID-transponder that is carried by the passing animal in order to identify the animal; and a controller, the controller is operative for receiving the animal identification and capable to store, process and display the identifications.

    • One variation of a method for managing dairy production includes: retrieving a set of electronic feed data for feed materials; receiving life events of a milking animal, including a gynecological status of the milking animal; collecting milking records corresponding to milking events of the milking animal; generating a milk production model for the milking animal based on the life events and milking records; in response to entry of a target milk production value for the milking animal, generating a feed schedule specifying a combination of feed materials based on the milk production model and the electronic feed data to achieve the target milk production value by the milking animal and estimating a milk production profit corresponding to achievement of the target milk production value; and, in response to entry of a target feed value, generating a feed schedule and estimating a milk production value for the milking animal.
