    • Disclosed is a milking plant with a herd management system for monitoring and controlling a milking operation for each individual animal in a total group of dairy animals. The plant includes a plurality of milking places and a plurality of milking units each associated with a respective milking place. An identification means is used to identify individual animals entering the milking plant through an entrance. The identification means is in communication with a control means and with an associated evaluation unit and is disposed at the entrance to the milking plant so as to ensure that the individual animal, which has been identified immediately enters the milking place so that the association of the identified animal with the milking place is established. Only a first type of milking places or milking units respectively is provided with a measuring unit while a second type of milking places or milking units is not provided with a measuring unit. A first quantity is the quantity of the measuring units in the milking places or milking units and the second quantity is the number of milking places or milking units not provided with the measuring units, where the sum of the first quantity and the second quantity corresponds to a total quantity of the milking places or the milking units. Each measuring unit captures individual animal data for herd management including milking time, duration of milking, milk yield, milk flow, guide value and behaviour of the animal during milking. The captured animal data is stored in the control device, and is processed and evaluated by the associated evaluation unit; where the evaluation unit, by way of individual history data including health status, lactation status, reproduction status, number of lactations, milk yield history, milking times and time between milking pertaining to the identified animal, processes the animal data captured in milking the identified animal, so as to obtain statements about the total milk yield of the total group of animals which is available after milking of the total group of animals.
