    • An optical fiber treatment system is provided for high power laser transmission to an area of medical treatment. A side fire optical fiber tip for use in high power laser applications having outputs of greater than or equal to 50 Watts is a key to the system. Embodiments are particularly appropriate for the medical treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) with a side fire optical fiber tip using a Holmium:YAG laser or a high power diode laser. Such procedures can be done with only local anesthesia A predetermined length of an output tip on the distal end of the optical fiber of the present invention is formed with an optical fiber core and cladding layer of preselected thickness wherein the cladding to core diameter ratio is at least as great as 1.2. A side fire surface is formed on the distal end of the core/clad output end. Over this optical fiber output end, a pure silica capillary tube is fused to the predetermined length of exposed cladding where the outermost cladding is also pure silica to reduce thermal mismatch during the fusion process. By having the refractive index at the fusing interface of the tube to the cladding matched, and bubbles or gaps eliminated or prevented, it is possible to substantially eliminate Fresnel reflection losses at this interface. Further, the outer surface area where the laser energy is exiting from the tube may be heat treated with a laser to increase durability for high power laser energy transmission in fluid environments. Germanium-doped silica as well as pure silica can be used as fiber core material.

    • A medical radiation treatment system is disclosed for identifying and monitoring the use of disposable or reusable optical fibers or other optical accessories. The treatment system comprises a radiation source unit connected to a recognition/control unit, and a medical radiation delivery system connected to an identification/recordation unit. This forms a read-write system to ensure that radiation parameters conform to delivery device characteristics, and to prevent the use of overused or incompatible delivery devices. This is achieved by reading previously encoded information in the identification/recordation unit that provides all usage history, including number of uses or total duration of use. The encoded information is updated after use, and preferably frequently or continuously during use, to guarantee a complete usage history even after an incomplete treatment. Additionally, the treatment system can differentiate between completed treatments, incomplete treatments and calibration, to retain an accurate record of all the stresses on a fiber. A transponder sends information to the source unit, and also receives and writes information to a non-volatile memory chip or other storage means. The identification/recordation unit, including the transponder and memory, is powered by sending/receiving means in the recognition/control unit without physical, optical or electrical connection between the source unit and delivery system.

    • Pharmaceutical liposomal formulations are described for photodynamic therapy comprising a, hydrophobic porphyrin photosensitizer, a monosaccharide and one or more synthetic phospholipids, which are stable in storage especially through freeze-drying process. The liposomal formulations provide therapeutically effective amounts of the photosensitizer for intravenous administration. In particular derivatives of chlorins and bacteriochlorins, such as temoporfin, are, hydrophobic photosensitizers whose efficacy and safety are enhanced by such liposomal formulations. The formulation can be efficiently freeze-dried preserving the size of the liposomal vehicles, and the content of a therapeutically effective amount of the photosensitizer, due to the selection of phospholipids and monosaccharides. The invention also relates to liposome compositions formed upon reconstitution with an aqueous vehicle. The freeze-dried formulation upon reconstitution with a suitable aqueous vehicle forms liposomes that are useful for intravenous administration.

    • The present invention provides for an apparatus and method to manufacture optical fiber in a way that produces controlled and patterned diffusion of optical radiation along its length. The novelty of the described invention is that the patterns of diffusion are produced at the time the optical fiber is manufactured. The “in-line” manufacturing method avoids the need for post-production treatment of the fiber, which makes the process highly efficient and economical. Light diffusing optical fibers of significant length can be produced. Several manufacturing configurations to achieve the desired effects and their inclusion in the fiber production process are described. The processes can be configured to process optical fibers constructed from a wide variety of known glass, polymeric or other materials. The partially diffusing optical fibers of this invention have applications ranging from illuminated fabrics and toys and to lighting systems and medical instruments. A distributed sensor comprising a light detector coupled to a partially diffusing fiber is also disclosed.

    • A device and method is disclosed for permanent or semi-permanent removal of hair through the activation of microparticles introduced into hair follicles. Microparticles are incorporated into a composition that is topically applied to the skin. These microparticles containing or consisting of chromophores or chemically activated molecules are of a variety of shapes and sizes. Microparticles are within a size range of 1 micron to 70 microns, and preferably between 10 and 50 microns. Microparticles of this size and variety of shapes enter hair follicles on all areas of the skin without entering other areas of the skin, such as the stratum corneum or sweat gland channels. Treatment of the skin with electromagnetic radiation, ultrasonic radiation or chemical means activates the chromophore or chemically activated compounds, thus destroying the hair follicle without damaging other areas of the skin. In another embodiment, microparticles further contain nanoparticles released further into the hair follicle by use of a solvent or other method, allowing chromophores or chemically activated molecules to penetrate deeper into the follicle and avoid structures such as the sebaceous gland.
