    • Compositions and processes are disclosed for economical separation of fluid mixtures. Broadly, the present invention discloses ionic polymer compositions that are useful for perm-selective membrane separations. More particularly, ionic polymers of the invention comprise a plurality of repeating structural units having as a constituent part thereof organic ionic moieties consisting of nitrogen containing anions and/or cations. In the form of non-porous membranes, ionic polymers of the invention facilitate recovery of purified organic and inorganic products from fluid mixtures by means of perm-selective membrane separations. The present invention also provides methods for forming the ionic polymers, for example by treating selected nitrogen-containing organic polymers with acids, or treating a polymeric material comprising a plurality of carboxylate groups with an amine. Ionic polymer compositions of the invention are particularly useful for simultaneous recovery of a permeate product of an increased concentration, and a desired non-permeate stream, from a fluid mixture containing at least two compounds of different boiling point temperatures.

    • The present invention provides an optical switch including a loss element having a signal loss, and a rare earth doped gain element optically connected in series with the loss element. The rare earth doped gain element is operable to produce a signal gain. The signal gain and the signal loss are about equal. The present invention also provides a method of optical switching including optically connecting a loss element in series with a rare earth doped gain element and passing an optical signal through the loss element and the gain element. The loss element attenuates the optical signal by a first amount. The method further includes selectively applying an optical pump to the gain element to perform the switching, the gain element amplifying the optical signal by the first amount in response to the optical pump.

    • In one embodiment, a cart (5) having a first vessel (10) which fits within a second vessel (90) is used to transport and store an integrated circuit substrate. The integrated circuit substrate is placed within the first vessel (10) and the door (18) of the first vessel (10) is closed and sealed against a door seal (24). The first vessel (10) is then purged with nitrogen to expel moisture and reactive gases from the interior of the first vessel (10). After purging, the first vessel (10) is then placed within the second vessel (90). The door (102) of the second vessel (90) is then closed and sealed against a door seal (104). The second vessel (90) is then purged with nitrogen to expel moisture and reactive gases from the interior of the second vessel (90). The cart (5) containing the integrated circuit substrate is then transported to the next manufacturing area. Integrated circuits and other articles may be manufacturing using the cart system of the present invention.

    • An oral composition, such as a paste or gel dentifrice or a liquid mouthwash, containing a substantially water insoluble non-cationic antibacterial agent, such as triclosan, which, when used to clean the teeth or rinse the mouth, acts to decrease plaque on the teeth, is packaged in a dispensing container which includes a solid polymeric material, such as polyfluoroethylene, which is compatible with the antibacterial agent so that excessive loss of anti-plaque activity of such agent on storage is avoided. Alternatively, various other polymers may be employed as container parts, which normally would cause excessive losses of anti-plaque action of the antibacterial agent in the composition, but such action is countered by the presence of a stabilizer, such as a terpene, e.g., limonene, in the oral composition formula. The oral composition preferably contains a tooth hardening proportion of a source of fluoride ions, an anti-tartar proportion of a polyphosphate, a stabilizing proportion (in conjunction with the fluoride source) for the polyphosphate, of a polyvinyl methyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymer, and normal adjuvants for the oral preparation. A method for inhibiting development of plaque on teeth is also within the invention, as is a cleaning article containing an effective amount of the invented dentifrice.
