    • In accordance with the present invention, when a user makes an information assistance call to an information/call center requesting a listing, the user can make arrangements for various services relating to the requested listing in the same call. These services may be presented to an operator as options, and in turn presented to the user for selection. However, the options undesired by the user, based on personal preferences stored in a personal profile, or unsupported by the telephone service to which the user subscribes are not presented to the operator and thus not made available to the user. If the user is interested in any of the available options, the operator accesses the selected option and makes an appropriate arrangement for the underlying service for the user.

    • Electrostatic discharge (ESD) sensing apparatus for testing and displaying extremely high frequency discharges. The apparatus incorporates a surface mounted current shunt in the form of a thin foil or film of less than one skin depth thickness at the frequency of interest. This is sandwiched between a coaxial connector base plate and a ground plane mounting plate. The foil or film is symmetrically oriented about the axis of the connector at a central opening in the mounting plate. A discharge path is provided through the opening to the foil and, on the other side, through a small resistor to the central conductor of the coaxial connector which may be connected to a measuring or display apparatus for a complete test system. A calibration unit includes a plurality of sensing devices configured for different cutoff frequencies and levels of discharge pulses.

    • An electromagnetic shield for shielding against electromagnetic interference in a manner similar to a solid metal shield having a thickness of several skin depths. In all of the disclosed embodiments, a plurality of electrically-conductive closed rings or loops are arranged in a predetermined relationship, to conduct current inducted by electromagnetic energy received from an exterior interference source or an interior signal source. The special ring or loop configuration causes the induced current to concentrate in the portions of the rings closest to a surface adjacent to the source of the electromagnetic energy, to enhance the shielding. One set of embodiments is suitable for use in a sheet material for housings or enclosures, while another set is suitable for use in the joints between mating coaxial conductors or between adjacent sheets of metal. Still another embodiment is suitable for use as a flexible or rigid cable shield.

    • To personalize a voice information delivery service, e.g., directory assistance, a voice email service, stock quotation service and other information assistance services, a user is afforded an option to customize automated voices/speeches to deliver information to him/her. The automated voices/speeches may be customized for different services and functions, and/or in terms of urgency, context, etc. of the information to be voice-delivered. In an illustrative embodiment, the user's voice preferences for voice information deliveries are recorded in a user profile, which are represented by sets of speech characterizing parameters, respectively, based on which a text-to-speech (TTS) engine reads given text information to the user in the corresponding preferred voices/speeches.
