    • A pull-to-close collet chuck for use with lathes equipped with servo-type bar loaders. The chuck is configured to be coupled to a lathe drawtube and translates linear movement of the drawtube to a work-gripping action to a collet. The chuck generally includes a ramp body surrounding a first portion of the collet and integral means for fixing the ramp body within a central bore of the chuck. A piston surrounds the collet and has a bearing surface adjacent a ramp surface of the ramp body, and a wedge is located between the ramp surface of the ramp body and the bearing surface of the piston. The wedge has multiple bearing surfaces through which the work gripping action is transferred from the piston to the collet as a result of radial inward movement of the wedge.

    • A circular flexible collet that provides a 360 degree gripping engagement with a cylindrical workpiece and which is operable by an actuator member incorporated in a workpiece chuck. The collet may be constructed as an internal collet for gripping engagement with a workpiece internal periphery, or as an external collet for gripping engagement with a workpiece external periphery. The flexible collet may be used for single, or plural workpiece gripping actions. The collet includes a split spring steel body having a radial opening split space and an outer and an inner circular periphery. One circular periphery is a workpiece gripping surface, and the other circular periphery has a tapered cam surface engageable by a workpiece chuck actuator member. The tapered cam surface has a plurality of circumferentially spaced apart slots, having an open outer end. In an internal collet the tapered cam surface is formed around the collet body inner periphery. In an external collet the tapered cam surface is formed around the collet body outer periphery.

    • A tool holder includes a body, a collet, and a collet mover. The body is formed to include a collet chamber and a collet-mover chamber arranged to communicate wit the collet chamber. The collet includes a tool-gripping surface arranged to define a tool-receiving chamber adapted to receive a machine tool therein. The collet is mounted for movement in the collet chamber along a central axis of the body between a tool-grip position to cause the tool-gripping surface to move radially inwardly toward the central axis to grip the machine tool in the tool-receiving chamber and a tool-release position to cause the tool-gripping surface to move radially outwardly away from the central axis to release the machine tool. The collet mover is positioned to lie in the collet-mover chamber and is coupled to the collet to draw the collet along the central axis to the tool-grip position.

    • A collet nut has a nut member for threaded engagement with threads on a collet holder. A sleeve member is rotationally coupled to the nut member in a first tightening mode of the collet nut. An annular ring is rotationally coupled to the sleeve member and rotationally coupled to the nut member in the first tightening mode. Facing ramped bearing surfaces are defined between opposing faces of the annular ring and the nut member and bearing devices, such as balls, are disposed between the opposite faces. In the first tightening mode, the nut member and the annular ring rotate as a unit. In a second tightening mode, the annular ring rotates relative to the nut member so that opposing high sections of the ramped bearing surfaces are brought rotationally closer thereby forcing the annular ring axially away from the nut member which imparts an additional axial force to a collet engaging member of the collet nut.

    • A tool receiver or chuck is provided which may receive a cutting tool, such as a router bit or the like, therewithin and non-rotatably retain the tool relative to a rotary driving device. The tool receiver includes a plurality of blades substantially encased within a conical surface. A biasing member biases the blades toward a narrow end of the conical surface such that the blades are biased in a tool engaging or operative position. The biasing member and conical surface thus bias the blades radially inward toward the cutting tool such that the blades engage the conical surface and the cutting tool. The tool receiver preferably includes a retaining member, which retains the blades within the conical surface and biases the blades radially outwardly toward the conical surface. The tool may be released by overcoming the biasing force of the biasing member by moving or sliding a retaining ring or by activating a lever or the like, such that no accessory wrenches or tools are required to insert or release a cutting tool or bit. Preferably, a width and radial length of the blades are dimensioned and/or the contact surfaces are defined to provide non-rotating engagement of the cutting tool by the blades, since the conical surface substantially limits twisting of the blades as the blades begin to rotate relative to the tool, thereby locking the tool relative to the blades. A ratio of the effective contact width of the blades to the radial length of the blades is preferably less than or equal to the coefficient of friction between each of the blades and the tool.
