    • Disclosed is an obstetric forceps for grasping a baby during childbirth, the forceps having blades which are approximately adapted to the shape of a baby's head, are made of a rigid material and have contact surfaces for grasping the baby's head, the contact surfaces being provided with at least one device for detecting the pressure prevailing between the contact surfaces and the baby's head. The invention is distinguished by the contact surfaces of the forceps blades each is provided with an elongated, elastically ductile contact body, and the pressure detection device is designed in such a manner that the contact body has, at least at the side facing the contact surface, an electrically conductive surface and that electrodes, which are insulated from each other, are provided at the contact surfaces of the forceps blades, upon deformation of the contact body, the electrodes being contactable with the same in such a manner that with increasing deformation of the contact body, an increasing number of electrodes are electrically interconnected by the electrically conductive surface of the contact body.

    • An instrument for use in uterine laparoscopic surgery, said instrument including a tubular element which is adapted for insertion into the vagina with the front end-part of the instrument, as seen in the insertion direction, receiving the cervix, wherewith the edge of the front part of said tubular element is shaped to support against the top wall of the vagina, and wherewith the instrument includes a sealing ring which embraces the tubular element and functions to provide a seal between said element and said vaginal wall. The edge portion of the front part of the tubular element is constructed so that the top wall of the vagina will be supported around the full periphery of said edge portion when the tubular element is positioned in the vagina. The instrument includes end closure means detachably fastened to the tubular element and the rear end-part of the tubular element is adapted to provide an anchorage for a suture which is anchored through the cervix. The rear end of the tubular element, as seen in the insertion direction, carries the end closure means which functions to pressure-seal the passageway passing through said tubular element.

    • The clamp includes a passage adjacent to a pivot connection and into which a corresponding pivot pin is at least partially displaced from its original position into a position in which the circumcision clamp becomes inoperative. In one embodiment, the passage is located at one end of the latching member having a notch that is adjacent to a spur so that, when the clamp is moved to a closed position, the spur slips into the notch. The spur and notch resist movement of the latching member thereby causing the pivot pin to be forcibly displaced from its original position into an inoperative position. Select elements of the clamp may be formed of transparent plastic material for allowing a circumcision operator to monitor the glans penis therebeneath so that same is not damaged during a circumcision. Alternately, the clamp may be formed of aluminum and stainless steel. In such an embodiment, the passage is located at one end of the handle. As the handle moves to an open position from a closed position, the corresponding pivot pin at the end of the handle is forcibly displaced at least partially into the passage and thereby rendering the clamp inoperative. Such an embodiment of the clamp may be sent back to the manufacturer to be refurbished and resterilized for reuse.

    • A novel umbilical cord clamp and a combined umbilical cord clamp and cutter are provided for clamping and cutting umbilical cords in one motion. The cutter comprises two shells joined by a longitudinal hinge. A transverse blade is mounted in one shell, and a cutting support is mounted in the other shell across from the blade. A clamping member is provided on one side of the blade as part of the cutter, and a removable clamp is provided on the other side of the blade. The umbilical cord to be cut is oriented generally parallel to the hinge and lying across the cutting support. As the shells of the cutter are closed, the umbilical cord is clamped on both sides of the blade, and the blade severs the umbilical cord in the same motion. After the cut is completed, the removable clamp is removed from the cutter, preferably revealing an aesthetically pleasing form such as the face of a koala bear.

    • A vacuum assisted fetal extraction apparatus and a monitoring device for use in conjunction therewith. The monitoring device includes a circuit including a timer operably coupled with a switch, which may comprise a differential pressure sensor. The switch is configured to be actuated by the formation of a vacuum to secure the fetal extractor to a fetus. At least partial release of the vacuum releases the switch to stop or pause the timer. The timer may be configured to be reset such that it only records or displays the duration of a specific application of the vacuum device, or it may be configured to record or display a cumulative duration based upon multiple applications of the vacuum device in an absolute sense or during a defined time period. Magnitude as well as the cumulative number of applications of an applied vacuum may also be measured and, optionally, displayed, as may the number of times traction force is applied to an infant during delivery.
