    • Multi-mode friction clutch (20) having a plurality of interleaved clutch plates (24) for establishing gear ratios in planetary and countershaft automatic transmissions and to provide smooth and self-synchronized shifting without the use of one-way clutches. Gear thrust force from associated helical gearing (70) and opposing hydraulic pressure is used to regulate the hydraulic pressure of a piston chamber by shifting an annular control sleeve (34) which controls fluid exhaust from the chamber (36) to maintain a direct relationship between the torque capacity of the clutch and the variable torque it actually carries. Consequently, the clutch is automatically released when the torque diminishes to zero or reverses. The clutch is applied in a normal lock mode for predetermined gear ratios, set in one-way mode for shifting and totally released when the shift is completed.

    • A hydraulic coupling (10) for use in motor vehicle driveline applications to limit speed differentiation and transfer drive torque between two rotary members. The hydraulic coupling includes a multi-plate clutch assembly (22) operably connecting the two relatively rotatable members, and a sealed actuator assembly (20) for actuating the clutch assembly (22) in response to the magnitude of speed differentiation between the two rotary members. The actuator assembly (20) includes a hydraulic pump (24) and a piston (70) which are sealed relative to the clutch assembly (22). The sealed actuator assembly (20) includes an internal recirculation path for supplying hydraulic fluid retained therein between a low pressure supply chamber (130) at the inlet side of the hydraulic pump (24) and a high pressure piston chamber (72) provided at the discharge side of the hydraulic pump (24). Hydraulic pressure in the piston chamber (72) controls the magnitude of the clutch engagement force exerted by the piston (70) on the clutch assembly (22). As a further feature, the recirculation path includes a flow restrictor (146) which provides a bleed flow path for supplying high pressure fluid from the piston chamber (72) to the supply chamber (130) following cessation of the pumping action to release the clutch assembly (22).

    • The invention concerns a drive system for the transmission of power from a drive source to a plurality of output trains, the drive system comprising a transfer gear connected upstream of the output trains, and an arrangement for ensuring that the output trains are not overloaded with torque. The arrangement comprises a safety clutch (9) with a basic clutch body for the frictionally engaged connection of two machine parts, and at least one thin-walled sleeve (12) which forms a wall (13) of an annular chamber (14) upon which pressure medium can act. The arrangement further comprises at least one feed line (28) which extends through the clutch body to the annular chamber and can be closed off in an air- and fluid-tight manner by means of closure elements (50). The arrangement finally comprises a pressure-relief mechanism (31). According to the invention, the safety clutch is arranged upstream of the transfer gear. The pressure-relief mechanism (31) is coupled to an arrangement for detecting the torque at the output trains and/or a magnitude which is proportional to the torque and is associated with each output train, and/or a influencing quantity in the area surrounding the machine. The clutch comprises means for activating the pressure-relief mechanism (31) when the torque and/or a magnitude proportional to the torque and/or an influencing quantity is/are exceeded.

When the cylinder (10) and piston (22) are axially separated by fluid pressure, the ball (230) is located in a detent (234) formed in the valve actuator (232) such that the head (221) of the spool member (220) seals with the seat (218) and prevents release of fluid pressure from the pressure chamber. When the cylinder (10) and the piston (22) move axially against the normal bias direction of the fluid pressure, the ball (230) rolls out of the detent (234) and pushes against the spool member (220) to unseat the head (221) from the valve seat (218). In the most preferred form, the valve actuator (232) is adjustably mounted to the piston (22) by a turnbuckle (238), with the valve actuator (232) and the turnbuckle (238) formed of hexagonal stock for receipt in a wrench.
