    • A valve operating system of an engine opens and closes a valve by a swing cam being swung by rotation of an operating cam. The operating cam has a cam surface and is rotated by the engine, and the swing cam has a cam surface in sliding contact with the valve and a cam follower in sliding contact with the cam surface of the operating cam. The cam surface of the operating cam and the cam surface of the swing cam are formed so that an acceleration component of the swing cam is larger than that of the operating cam in a positive region of a valve lift acceleration defined as a sum of the acceleration component of the operating cam and the acceleration component of the swing cam.

    • There is provided, in one aspect of the present description, an internal combustion engine system. In one example, the system comprises a controller configured to control an intake valve closing timing varying mechanism to vary a closing timing of the intake valve to regulate air charged in a combustion chamber in accordance with engine operating conditions and, in a first engine operating condition where a least volume of air is required to be charged into the combustion chamber, retard a closing timing of the intake valve to a most retarded crank angle which is after bottom dead center during a cylinder cycle and satisfies the following formulas: α≧−0.2685×ε02+10.723×ε0+15.815 and ε0≧11.0, where α is the most retarded crank angle and ε0 is a geometric compression ratio of the engine.

    • Digitally-compressed audio and image data of a plurality of programs (logical channels) are distributed and superimposed for every horizontal synchronizing signal period together with identification information of each of the programs in place of a luminance signal of an analog video signal of each of physical channels. Each of the physical channels is superimposed in its frequency and distributed from a signal transmission facility of a broadcasting station. At the receiving side, a desired physical analog channel is tuned and the compressed digital audio and image data superimposed on the tuned video signal are selected and taken as desired logical channel data in reference to program identification information, and the compressed digital audio and image data are decoded to obtain their original audio and moving images. With such an arrangement as above, in an existing CATV system, a mere insertion of an encoder unit into a transmission side and a decoder unit into a receiving side, without improving a characteristic of an analog video signal distribution system such as a cable or the like, respectively, enables a greater number of programs to be supplied correspondingly by the amount of digital compression.
