    • The present invention discloses the cloning and expression in Escherichia coli of the SstI/SacI restriction-modification system. The SstI methylase gene was cloned by methylase selection (the "Hungarian Trick" and the orientation and boundaries of the gene were established. The level of methylation of the host was improved significantly by expressing the SstI methylase from the strong RPSL promoter. Using the SstI methylase clone as a probe, a chromosomal map was generated in the area of the gene for the SstI methylase. DNA downstream from the methylase was cloned and found to contain the gene for the SstI endonuclease. The orientation of the SstI endonuclease was established and a strong promoter was placed close to the SstI endonuclease gene by generating nested deletions. By these methods, an E. coli strain was constructed which produced high levels of SstI endonuclease. The SacI locus in the S. achromogenes chromosome was found to be identical to the SstI locus in S. stanford in all measured respects.

    • An apparatus is disclosed for automatic optical inspection of a wafer boat having a plurality of parallel slotted side rods and bottom rods. A cradle holds the wafer boat in a stationary position. A separate optical sensor is mounted upon a carriage for each of the rods to be measured. Each of these sensors projects an optical beam toward the corresponding rod where, when longitudinally aligned within an individual slot, the beam is parallel to and substantially near the bottom of the slot. As the carriage is scanned from one end of the rods of the wafer boat to the other, the optical beam will be alternately obstructed by the rod or transmitted through a slot, thereby determining the slot edge locations of each of the slots in each of the rods in accordance with the position of the carriage. The slot widths and slot locations can then be determined from the slot edge locations. Additionally, the length of each of the bottom rods can be measured by reflecting an optical beam off of a flat surface of a clamp block positioned against the end of each of the bottom rods.

    • A telecommunications FIFO provides an interface between two serial data transmission channels which have independent clocks and which can operate according to different protocols. The FIFO contains two storage registers each equal to a frame of data in length. Data is written into and read from alternate storage registers with the transfer between one register and the other occurring upon the receipt of write and read frame sync pulses respectively. At the receipt of each write frame sync pulse and read frame sync pulse, the read address location and the write address location respectively are sampled to determine if a FIFO overfill or empty condition is eminent. If such condition exists, the telecommunications FIFO does not switch registers, but rather rewrites the same register or rereads the same register respectively, to thereby perform a slip operation.

    • A tool coupling arrangement is disclosed for a tooling assembly (10) adapted for automatic tool insertion into a spindle assembly (12), the tooling assembly (10) having an axially moveable element (20) for causing movement independently of the spindle assembly (12). A first coupling arrangement secures this tooling assembly (10) after it is inserted within the spindle assembly (12), while a second coupling arrangement automatically couples the separately moveable element (20) to an inner draw bar (84) of the spindle assembly (12). The second coupling arrangement couples the inner draw bar (84) to the independently moveable element (20) by limited rotation thereof after limited axial advance to enable continued axial advancing of element (20) by movement of the inner draw bar (84), independently of the spindle assembly (12).
