    • A combustion apparatus including a mixture feeding pipe for injecting a mixture of pulverized coal and combustion air into a furnace, with the mixture then being ignited. A radially outwardly flared flame maintaining ring is provided at a tip end of the mixture feeding pipe, with the maintaining ring being exposed to a reduced atmosphere and to high temperatures due to radiant heat from the furnace. A projection extends into the furnace beyond the flame maintaining ring so as to protect the flame maintaining ring from radiation from inside the furnace thereby suppressing an excessive increase in temperature. Combustion air flows along a surface of the projection so as to provide at oxidized atmosphere. A pulverized coal/air separating member extends within the mixture feeding pipe, and a portion or separation of the flow forcibly occurs is locally formed in a conical end portion of the pulverized coal/air separating member, whereby it is possible to effect a complete combustion in a stabilized manner regardless of the unit capacity and load of the combustion apparatus.

    • A control apparatus for an automatic transmission calculates the running resistance of a vehicle based on the vehicle acceleration and the torque generated by the engine. When the running resistance exceeds a first prescribed value, it is determined that the vehicle is travelling on an uphill slope on which upshifting should not take place, so the transmission is prevented from upshifting. When the running resistance falls below a second prescribed value, it is determined that the vehicle is travelling on a downhill slope, so the transmission is made to downshift to a gear in which the engine of the vehicle will perform engine braking. When the running resistance is between the first and second prescribed values, the control apparatus controls the transmission based on the vehicle speed and the throttle opening.

    • A current control circuit for controlling a current supplied to the coil 3 of an electromagnetic type actuator includes a power transistor 2 and a current detecting resistor 4 coupled in series with the coil 3. The voltage across the current detecting resistor 4 is amplified by a differential amplifier 10 and held by a capacitor 8 of a peak hold circuit 6. The input pulse signal A is smoothed by a smoothing circuit 14. A differential amplifier 18 compares the outputs C of the smoothing circuit 14 with that D of the peak hold circuit 6. The output of an OR gate 20 turns on the power transistor 2 either when the input pulse A or the output of the differential amplifier 18 is at the high level. The voltage held across the capacitor 8 is reset by the transistor 9 in response to the output of the OR gate 20. The duty factor of the power transistor 2 is automatically adjusted to compensate for the variations in the circuit characteristics.
