    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid inconveniences in excavation resulting from differences of strength of a natural ground and effectively excavate the ground continuously. SOLUTION: When a procedure starts, a natural ground is actually excavated. In this time, the revolution number R and the excavation speed V are adjusted and the ground is excavated so that a torque and a thrust force acting on a cutter head are kept lower than a limit value. Then, measured values of respective sensors are input and the strength σ of the natural ground being actually excavated is estimated and whether the strength σ is in between strengths σ1 and σ2 preset in advance or not is judged. If the strength σ is not in between σ1 and σ2, the ground is excavated in a synchronous excavation mode in which two sets of main grippers and thrust jacks are simultaneously stretched and contracted. When the strength σ is in between σ1 and σ2, the cutting head is advanced by making use of the reaction in the main gripper of one of sets. The other set of main gripper and thrust jack are contracted to prepare the excavating operation during the advancing process, and the ground is excavated in a continuous excavation mode repeating these motions alternately.
