摘要： Electrochemical battery cells, and more particularly, to cells comprising a lithium negative electrode and an iron disulfide positive electrode. Before use in the cell, the iron disulfide has an inherent pH, or a mixture of iron disulfide and an pH raising additive compound have a calculated pH, of at least a predetermined minimum pH value. In a preferred embodiment, the pH raising additive compound comprises a Group IIA element of the Periodic Table of the Elements, or an acid scavenger or pH control agent such as an organic amine, cycloaliphatic epoxy, amino alcohol or overbased calcium sulfonate. In one embodiment, the iron disulfide particles utilized in the cell have a specific reduced average particle size range. Methods for preparing cathodes and electrochemical battery cells comprising such cathodes including (a) iron disulfide or (b) a mixture of iron disulfide and the pH raising additive compound, having (a) an inherent pH or (b) a calculated pH greater than or equal to a predetermined minimum value are disclosed.

摘要： The invention is an electrochemical battery cell, such as a Li/FeS 2 cell, with a nonaqueous liquid electrolyte having a solvent with a high ether content and a solute including LiI and one or more additional salts, preferably LiCF 3 SO 3 , that can avoid a sharp drop in voltage on high rate and high power discharge at low temperatures, while still providing reasonable capacity on high rate and high power discharge at room temperature. The electrolyte solvent includes 1,3-dioxolane and 1,2-dimethoxyethan in a volume ratio greater than 45 : 55 and less than 85 : 15. When the total solute concentration in the electrolyte is low (0.40 to 0.65 mol/l solvent), the solute contains at least 35 mole percent LiI, and when the total solute concentration in the electrolyte is high (greater than 0.65 to 2.0 mol/l solvent), the solute contains less than 35 mole percent LiI.

In a preferred embodiment, the first and second powders are divided into groups based on ranges in their particle size distribution. Particle characteristics such as roughness and elongation are used to selected groups of both powders that are combined to produce the blended zinc powder. The blended zinc powders enable battery manufacturers to maximize the cell's run time while minimizing the cost of the zinc.
