    • In a vertical cavity surface emitting laser including a cavity structure formed by arranging a first reflector (102), an active region (104) and a second reflector (107) on a substrate, the second reflector is formed to include a refractive index periodic structure having a first medium showing a first refractive index and a second medium showing a second refractive index lower than the first refractive index.     • This invention relates to a technique that prevents an image from falling outside a given range when a printer is controlled to form an image on an arbitrary medium while assuring a margin of a predetermined amount. A host computer shifts an image by only a partial amount of a target margin amount in a predetermined direction within an effective print range of a medium. Furthermore, the host computer controls a printer to form the image by further shifting the image by nearly the remaining amount of the target margin amount so as to form an image within the effective print range. In this way, since the host computer and printer add a margin in two steps, print data can be prevented from falling outside a given range upon processing a binding margin on the printer side.

    • To provide a printing system and a printing apparatus which can ensure high-speed, normal printing with small memory requirements even when lots of print commands are sent to a printer. The printing apparatus includes a print mode determination unit which judges whether intermediate-language data can fit in a page memory when print command data is converted in normal print mode and selects the normal print mode if the data can fit in, but selects compressed print mode if the data cannot fit in. Furthermore, the print mode determination unit includes a data reprocessing unit which, when the compressed print mode is selected, reduces any compressible part of intermediate-language data which corresponds to fine-gradation image data in normal print mode using a compression/decompression process, output gradation conversion process, clipping process, or reversible compression process whichever is applicable before storing it again in the page memory.
