    • According to a first aspect of the invention, a combustion heater has an ECU for controlling operations of a glow plug, a battery, a fuel pump, and a blower for supplying air to a combustor. The ECU is responsive to an instruction signal instructing starting ignition of the combustor for starting to cause the battery to apply a first predetermined voltage to the glow plug, and at the same time starting to cause both of the fuel pump and the blower to operate for a predetermined time period, and when ignition of the combustor is detected, the ECU starts to cause both of the fuel pump and the blower to operate, and at the same time starts to cause the battery to apply a second predetermined voltage lower than the first predetermined voltage to the glow plug. According to a second aspect of the invention, the ECU is responsive to an instruction signal instructing stopping combustion of the combustor for causing the blower to supply air at a flow rate at which air has been supplied to the combustor immediately before the signal is supplied to the ECU, for a first predetermined time period, and after the first predetermined time period has elapsed, the ECU causes the flow rate to be progressively decreased to a first predetermined flow rate over a second predetermined time period, and then causes the blower to supply air at a second predetermined flow rate larger than the first predetermined flow rate.

    • A heating container apparatus is provided for supplying heated air into a heating container on a vehicle for heating or keeping warm the cargo in the heating container, including a burner with an atomizing glow plug and an ignition glow plug; a heat exchanger for recovering heat generated by the burner; an air blower device for circulating heated air; a temperature control device, and a voltage control device. The voltage control device is supplied with electric power from a commercial power feed line to produce a voltage equal to the voltage of a power supply mounted on the vehicle, thereby keeping the interior of the heating container warm even when the engine of the vehicle is stopped. The temperature control device keeps the temperature in the heating container in a suitable temperature range at all times.

    • An improved apparatus for heating fluid by burning liquid fuel is disclosed. To heat fluid such as water, air or the like medium heat exchanging is effected between the combustion chamber in which liquid fuel is burnt with combustion air introduced therein and the fluid passage through which fluid to be heated flows. The apparatus includes means for controlling rotational speed of a single motor for rotating the fuel pump and the blower, means for controlling a flow rate of fuel to be pumped from the fuel pump, means for controlling a flow rate of combustion air and an electronic control unit into which a variety of parameters relative to the above-mentioned means are inputted. The parameters are processed in the electronic control unit to individually control the means for controlling rotational speed of the motor, the means for controlling a flow rate of fuel and the means for controlling a flow rate of combustion whereby heat exchanging therebetween is achieved without fluctuation in temperature of fluid. Typically, the parameters are rotational speed of the motor and flow rate of fuel pumped from the fuel pump. The parameters may be those as selected from a group of atmosphere pressure, temperature of combustion air, voltage of electric current, temperature of fluid before and behind heating and required heating temperature of fluid.

    • An air/fuel control system (including apparatus and method for a Stirling engine is disclosed. A signal generated by deviation of the temperature of the heater head gas temperature from a set-point is used to control an air flow throttle valve. Variations in the air flow of the external combustion circuit is sensed by way of a vortex-shedding device which delivers a D.C. electrical signal. The signal is shaped and amplified and used to control operation of one or more fuel injectors which feed into a common outlet manifold leading to the fuel nozzle serving the external combustion circuit. The fuel injectors are solenoid operated, one sized to provide a fuel flow rate of 0.4-2.0 g/sec., and at least two others are sized to provide a combined fuel flow rate of 2-15 g/sec., but 180.degree. out of phase with each other. The series of injectors provide an effective fuel control range of 0.4-15 grams/sec. to achieve an air/fuel ratio range of 37.5 to 1.
