    • An internal combustion engine includes a body defining at least a portion of a combustion chamber. The combustion chamber is adapted to receive a combustion mixture. A cavity in the body has an open end in fluid communication with the combustion chamber. The cavity is adapted to receive a portion of the combustion mixture in the combustion chamber through the open end such that substantially all of the combustion mixture received in the cavity is the combustion mixture received from the combustion chamber. An ignition source resides in the cavity at an end opposite the open end. An apertured member is adjacent to the ignition source and has one or more apertures therein. The apertures are operable to allow passage of the combustion mixture to the ignition source and, upon ignition of the combustion mixture in the cavity, jet a portion of the ignited combustion mixture into the combustion chamber.

    • A sensing device for reading data stored in a passive matrix memory including memory cells in the form of ferroelectric capacitors, includes an integrator circuit for sensing the current response and a device for storing and comparing two consecutive read values, one of which is a reference value. In a read method for use with the sensing device a bit line is connected to the sensing device for sensing a charge flowing therebetween and a memory cell at the crossing of the former and activated word line, whereafter two consecutive reads of the memory cell are performed and integrated over predetermined time periods in order to generate first and second read values which are compared for determining a logical value dependent on the sensed charge.

    • A stabilized, lipid membrane-based device is provided. This device includes a plurality of membrane-forming lipids, and a support for stabilizing the lipid membrane. Each membrane-forming lipid includes a long chain through which the lipid is anchored to a binding site on the support, and another long chain unattached to the support. The support binding sites are spaced apart from one another to provide the lipid membrane with an appropriate molecular packing density. Also provided is a process for determining the concentration of a selected chemical species in an aqueous electrolytic solution, using an electrochemical cell formed from a lipid membrane-based device in accordance with the present invention. This process includes the step of applying across the lipid membrane of the device an electrical potential difference to produce an analytical signal based upon an increase in membrane ion permeability.
