    • PURPOSE:To maintain a stable condition of idling even when a load applied to an internal combustion engine has rapidly changed, by providing a control valve opening timing determination means and the like and thereby ensuring a specified valve opening time length for each cylinder in consideration of the number of engine revolutions and the load applied to the engine. CONSTITUTION:The apparatus has a control valve opening timing determination means I. In this means I, when the valve opening time length calculated by a control valve opening time length calculator G is smaller than a specified valve opening time length determined from the number of revolutions of an internal combustion engine, a valve opening timing for a control valve C is determined from a valve opening time length calculated on the basis of a control valve closing timing set beforehand and fixed at a time prior to an intake valve opening timing. On the other hand, when the former is larger than the latter, the valve opening timing for the control valve C is determined from said latter, i.e., the number of engine revolutions. And a specified valve opening time length is ensured for each cylinder in consideration of the number of engine revolutions and the load applied to the engine. This can maintain a stable condition of idling even when the load has rapidly changed.

    • PURPOSE:To discriminate a specific cylinder in defective operation automatically and immediately by judging the operation of a control valve to this specific cylinder to be defective at the time of the difference value between the rotating speed of the specific cylinder at its explosion stroke and the average rotating speed of all the cylinders exceeding the specified value. CONSTITUTION:In the idling state, a cutoff valve 4 closes the intermediate part of a main intake passage 2 in such a way as to leave the sufficient volume to hold the specified air quantity necessary for an intake port 7 to maintain idling. A control valve 5 switches an auxiliary intake passage 3 by-passing the cutoff valve 4. Hereupon, an ECU 13 detects the rotating speed of a crankshaft every explosion stroke of each cylinder 1, determines each detected rotating speed as the rotating speed of the specific cylinder 1 at its explosion stroke at that time and compares each rotating speed with the average rotating speed of all the cylinders. When the difference value between both rotating speed exceeds the specified value, the ECU judges the operation of the control valve 5 to the specific cylinder to be defective. The specific cylinder 1, to which the defective operation of the control valve 5 is generated, can be thereby discriminated automatically and immediately.

    • PURPOSE: To reduce production of NOx, by a method wherein, in a device which fuel, providing a lean air-fuel ratio, in injected through a part of injection valves, the fuel is injected through said injection valve between the second stage of an exhaust stroke and a suction stroke, and the fuel is injected through other injection valve between a compression stroke and the first stage of the exhaust stroke.
      CONSTITUTION: In a drive in which a fuel injection valve 12 is installed in an intake air branch 11 communicated with an intake air port 5 of each cylinder for 4-cylinder engine, ignition is set in the order of #1, #3, #4, and #2, the #1 and #4 cylinders are set as a lean cylinder which provides a lean air-fuel ratio, and the #3 and #2 cylinders as a stoiki cylinder which provides a value near to a theorectical air-fuel ratio. In this internal-combustion engine, control is effected such that fuel is injected through a fuel injection valve 12 on the lean cylinder side between the second stage of an exhaust stroke and a suction stroke, and the fuel is injected through the fuel injection valve 12 on the stoiki cylinder side during a compression stork and the first stage of the exhaust stroke. This increases a learn combustion limit, and decrease production of NOx.

In other words, to the cylinders 11 and 12 in different pairs, fuel feeding apparatuses 31 and 32 are connected through different intake manifolds 21 and 22, and each air-fuel ratio of the cylinders 11 and 12 in different pair can be set independently. In this case, throttle bodies 41 and 42 for forming suction passages are installed between the fuel feeding apparatuses 31 and 32 and the intake manifolds 21 and 22, respectively. Further, the bore diameter of the throttle body 41 on the pair 11 side consisting of the second and the third cylinders having a lean air-fuel ratio set is set larger.
