    • A UV discharge lamp with improved operating life features a sealed chamber (12) and two pairs of electrodes. A running electrode (13) is configured to run at a relatively high operating current, compared to a standby electrode (14) having a lower operating current. The running electrode is activated during normal operation when the lamp is required to emit a UV source for use in an industrial process. The standby electrode is activated (and the running electrode deactivated) during a standby mode in order to maintain a "ready-to-use" state. In practice the service life of the lamp is extended because each electrode pair is run closer to its optimum temperature, reducing a sputtering effect which is detrimental to operation and ultimately leads to failure.

    • Devices and methods related to flat discharge tubes. In some embodiments, a gas discharge tube (GDT) device can include a first insulator substrate having first and second sides and defining an opening. The GDT device can further include second and third insulator substrates mounted to the first and second sides of the first insulator substrate with first and second seals, respectively, such that inward facing surfaces of the second and third insulator substrates and the opening of the first insulator substrate define a chamber. The GDT device can further include first and second electrodes implemented on the respective inward facing surfaces of the second and third insulator substrates, and first and second terminals implemented on at least one external surface of the GDT device. The GDT device can further include electrical connections implemented between the first and second electrodes and the first and second terminals, respectively.

    • The invention relates to a flat fluorescent light (1) having a discharge vessel (2) comprising a base plate (7), a cover plate (8) and a frame (9) forming a gastight soldered connection. Moreover, an almost infinite variety of electrode shapes can be made, specially with regard to creating a homogenous and optimized light density with reduced density loss on the edges of said light. At least the anodes (5, 6) are covered by a dielectric coating (15). Preferably, the light (1) is operated by pulse voltage source and is used for background lighting of LCD's, e.g. in monitors or diver information displays.
