    • This invention relates to a system including a scale that weighs an item placed on the scale and encodes the weight and/or other item information into a machine readable code. The system may include a display that is coupled to the scale and displays the machine readable code. The scale may encode the item in Quick Response (QR) code format, Universal Product Code (UPC) format, and/or other computer-readable format. A mobile device may take a picture of or otherwise scan the machine readable code to determine the weight and/or other information encoded therein. The system may include a wireless transmitter that wirelessly transmits the weight. The mobile device may include a wireless receiver that wirelessly receives the weight transmitted from the scale. The mobile device may execute a self-scan application that uses the de-encoded or otherwise obtained weight for pricing the item based on the weight or other purposes.

    • A system for checking merchandise items each carrying a coded item-identifying label includes movable support means (29) having an upper surface (55) which supports an item to be identified and which is coplanar with the fixed support surface (18) of a check-out counter (20). An optical scanning device (24) is arranged to scan the label of an item positioned on the movable support means (29) and to generate first data signals identifying the item, the scanning light beams passing through a light transmissive portion (39, 46) of the movable support means (29). The movable support means (29) is arranged to be moved downwards in response to the positioning of a merchandise item thereon, and signal generating means which engage the movable support means (29) generate second data signals representing the weight of such item. The first and second data signals are applied to a data terminal which generates third data signals representing the price of the identified item.

    • A self-service checkout system allows a purchaser to scan coded labels on each merchandise item purchased and to generate the weight of the items at a first checkout station (20). The weight of each merchandise item is compared with corresponding data stored in remote memory means (54). If the weight of the item is found to be valid, the combined weight of the purchased merchandise items is then determined. The purchaser takes the purchased merchandise items to a second checkout station (36) where the combined weight of the merchandise items is again generated and compared with the previously generated combined weight. If the combined weights are found to be valid, the checkout operation is completed. Display means (32) at the first checkout station (20) informs the purchaser of the price of each merchandise item being processed while a display means (48) at the second checkout station (36) displays the total amount due for the purchased merchandise items.

    • Methods, devices and systems for reordering an inventory item are provided herein. The device comprises a memory, a processor, and may comprise a sensor and/or a programming interface. The device receives an indication that an event occurred indicating that the inventory item has been used. The indication is received through a transceiver or through a sensor. The user programs a trigger threshold, and may program the device with a weighting factor for the triggering events or allow the device to calculate a weighting factor. The device automatically sends a signal when the number of triggering events calculated based on the weighting factor equals the trigger threshold. The indication may automatically reorder the inventory item or may send a message to the user requesting additional instructions.
