    • A wave energy conversion system or device is provided which includes a hull that serves as a float, moving up and down with incoming waves. The power take-off system contained within the hull comprises a longitudinal main rotary shaft upon which a series different diameter sets of dual same- diameter pinions interact with the main rotary shaft through their corresponding freewheels. This interaction only allows the main rotary shaft to rotate in only one direction. A fork-like rod system member that is either fixed directly to a base on the seabed or to a supporting underwater taut moored floating platform. This fork-like rod system member has an alternate rod in permanent contact with each pinion (two rods per each set of dual same-diameter pinions). The device also is capable of self- adjusting its mechanical properties and orientation to take into account the predominant wave frequency and direction over a period of time in a practical way to provide continuous, or multiple level, tuning of the system and is self-orienting for maximum and minimum energy absorption depending on sea conditions.

    • A thermo-magnetic actuator includes a chamber within a housing; a working fluid changing phase upon heating and in the chamber; an electrical heater for heating the working fluid; a piston rod slidable between a retracted position, retracted with respect to the housing, and an extended position extending outward of the housing; a spring biasing the piston rod toward the retracted position; an electromagnet at an end of the housing; and a ferromagnetic target assembly attached to the piston rod, sliding within the housing, and attracted toward the electromagnet, when an electrical current flows through the electromagnet, to maintain the piston rod in the extended position even if electrical power is no longer applied to the heater. Preferably, the position of the piston rod is detected by the actuator and electrical current flow to the electrical heater is terminated when the piston rod is detected at the extended position.

    • A microactuator for displacing a platform vertically with respect to a substrate includes a first rigid frame, a first flexible bimorph beam connecting the first frame to the substrate, a second rigid frame, a second flexible bimorph beam connecting the second frame to the first frame, and a third flexible bimorph beam connecting a platform to the second frame. Activation of the first, second, and third flexible bimorph beams allows vertical displacement of the platform with respect to the substrate, with negligible lateral shift. A microactuator assembly includes a substrate, a plurality of first rigid frames, a plurality of first flexible bimorph beams, a plurality of second rigid frames, a plurality of second flexible bimorph beams, a platform, and a plurality of third flexible bimorph beams. Activation of the first, second, and third bimorph beams allows vertical displacement of the platform with respect to the substrate, with negligible lateral shift. A further embodiment with four identical such microactuators oriented at four sides of the platform, can achieve ID or 2D angular scanning of the mirror plate by the activation of 1 or 2 adjacent microactuators.
