    • An apparatus and method for demodulating and remodulating a transmitted signal prior to presentation to a television receiver, the transmitted signal comprising a video signal, a first channel signal, and a second channel signal, wherein one of the two channel signals is selected, demodulated and remodulated with the video signal prior to presentation to the television receiver. The apparatus allows the viewer of a television receiver which accepts a single channel signal to select between one of two alternate channels signals associated with a video broadcast without the need to modify the television receiver. The apparatus is particularly well suited for television broadcasts using a dual carrier transmission format. A novel varactor diode tuning means is used in one embodiment for changing the center frequency of a frequency modulation demodulator. The disclosed apparatus also transparently allows stereo demodulation for television receivers which are capable of such stereo demodulation.

    • An arrangement for receiving both TV and FM broadcast signals, particularly suited for multi-media applications, is described. In the arrangement a standard TV tuner (TUN) effects a first frequency conversion of an FM broadcast signal. A combination of a mixer (MP2) and an oscillator (VCO) effects a second frequency conversion of the FM broadcast signal. In order to keep the arrangement relatively simple, the following is proposed. The oscillator (VCO) is included in a phase-lock loop (PLL), which is used for synchronous detection of a TV intermediate frequency signal. The phase-lock loop (PLL) comprises a switch (SW) for de-activating the phase-lock loop (PLL) in the case of FM broadcast signal reception, such that the oscillator (VCO) is effectively free running.

    • In order to delete commercial messages during the viewing and/or video tape recording of broadcast television signals a control circuit (11) is disclosed for producing a commercial editing control signal at the beginning of one or more television commercial messages, which signal continues for the duration of such messages and terminates after the end of the last of such messages. The control circuit (11) incorporates detection circuitry (48) for automatically detecting each of a series of fade breaks in the video and audio components of the television signal, wherein such fade breaks normally mark the beginning and end of each of one or more commercial messages that have been inserted in the program content. The first of a series of detected fade breaks marks the beginning of a single commercial or the first commercial in a consecutive block of commercials, and succeeding fade breaks occur at time intervals that correspond to the durations of the commercial messages. Cooperating with the circuitry for detecting the series of fade breaks (48) is electrical timing circuitry (60) which is triggered to cause the generation of the above-mentioned editing control signal. The timing circuitry (60) has a time out interval that is selected to be just slightly longer than the maximum anticipated length of each of the consecutive commercial messages, and is retriggered each time another fade break is detected. A steady control signal is thus generated which continues until the timing circuitry (60) is allowed to time out because of the absence of detected fade breaks, indicating the resumption of non-commercial program content. In the form of the control circuitry disclosed herein, the automatically generated control signal is used to operate a pause control (22) on a video tape recorder for momentarily stopping the recorder during the occurrence of one or more consecutive commercial messages.

    • Each television (120) in a cable television system has a multi-standard receiver for receiving television signals in predefined television signal formats. Hidden from the television viewer is a converter (104) coupling the respective television to a transmission cable (102). The only connection from the converter to the television is a cable connected to the television's cable or antenna input port (130). Each television includes a sensor (122) for receiving wireless command signals. The television's control circuitry (138) ignores wireless command signals not in a first defined set. The converter includes a sensor (132) for receiving a second defined set of wireless command signals. The converter's controller (156) ignores wireless command signals not in the second defined set. The converter's controller responds to wireless channel selection commands by tuning the frequency converter (158) to a respective television channel and/or by transmitting pay-per-view requests to the controller (112) at the head end of the system. A remote controller signal transmitter (126) includes a memory table (237) that stores command and signal format data to use when transmitting wireless commands. Some user commands are transmitted as wireless commands to the television, to the converter or at least one to both the television and the converter.
