    • A communication network call traffic management system includes a plurality of special resource devices (104-116), at least one telephone switch (144, 148) connected to a telecommunications network, a switch control interface (160), a plurality of application platforms (120-128), a control network (136), and a call traffic manager (132). The telephone switch has a plurality of telephone switch ports (156) with each switch port being associated with a special resource device. Each special resource device detects user-selectable information contained in a telephone call. The call traffic manager uses initial call information to allocate a special resource device, control the switch to direct the telephone call to a switch port that is associated with the allocated special resource device, and allocate a first application platform for interacting with the telephone call. At any point during the telephone call, the call traffic manager can interact with the telephone switch and/or the application platform to dynamically reallocate a new special resource device and/or a new application platform necessary to service the call.

    • Interactive medication data systems and methods are provided which include automated equipment for providing information pursuant to telephonic and electronic requests from callers. The system includes a database containing information for a variety of medications. The system receives an incoming audio communication relating to a request for information concerning a specific medication (30). The audio communication contains an identifier (40) which is mapped to the medication (50). System software matches the identifier with a portion of the information in the database relating to the medication (70), and then provides a signal which is representative of this information portion. The signal is then translated to an audio message, or written response, for transmitting to the caller (90). The system is particularly valuable in providing medication information to patients' that have their prescriptions on an existing pharmacy management database system.

    • A telephone ring detector (10) detects a ring signal voltage (60) from a diverse set of signals transmitted on a telephone line (12) before a complete alternating current ring signal cycle (58) is received. In an exemplary embodiment, the ring detector (10) includes a voltage threshold setting device (32) for establishing a voltage threshold (62) and comparing the ring signal voltage (60) to the voltage threshold (62) to provide an output signal (64) when the ring signal voltage (60) is above the voltage threshold (62). A pair of zener diodes (46, 48) having a selected voltage value can provide the threshold setting and comparison functions. A microprocessor (34), including a timer for measuring a time duration of the output signal (64), outputs a ring detection signal (66) when the time duration exceeds a predetermined time interval value, which is substantially less than a full ring cycle. A line switch (16) responsive to the ring detector (10) is provided to direct communication signals to a telecommunications device (18, 20, 22, 24, 26).

    • A system for producing voice message keepsakes includes a message processor (12) which may be accessed over a plurality of communication links, such as telephone lines. The processor (12) may be so accessed by means of a customer's communication set, such as a conventional telephone set (16) or by means of a subscriber set (18), and it is capable of distinguishing the two. When accessed by a customer's set, the processor (12) permits the caller to create a temporary mailbox associated with his gift purchase, in which he may then record a voice message. When called by a subscriber set (18), the processor (12) permits previously created mailboxes to be accessed and will transfer the message recorded therein to the subscriber set (18). The subscriber set (18) includes a receptacle for receiving a voice message keepsake in accordance with the present invention, and it will record thereon stored messages provided from the message processor (12), under control of the message processor (16). The invention also contemplates a unique construction for the voice message keepsake, and a method for recording on it.

    • A telephone answering device (TAD) (25) which includes a means of intelligently organizing voice messages, associated entered codes such as personal IDs and home telephone numbers, and information stored in the memory of the TAD. These codes or numbers are decoded by means of the caller entering DTMF signals into the telephone which are recognized, recorded and processed by the TAD. When processed with codes and personal information previously entered into the device's memory, the TAD displays (32) the identity of the callers for each message, thus providing a menu of choices, i.e., a list of callers. This enables the user to access messages in a selective manner based on the identity of the caller. The need to listen to the actual voice messages to determine the caller's identity and the need to listen to the messages sequentially or chronologically is obviated, saving both time and effort.

    • A protocol (10) for a digital stored voice paging system. The protocol (10) contains a multiplicity of limited frames each containing a short message section (12) and a voice data section (14). The short message section (12) contains repeated alert packets (16) for providing time diversity, and the voice data section is comprised of packets containing voice data streams. The packets of the voice data streams (20) are interspersed with one another and transmitted in scatter form throughout the length of the message time period, to improve the power consumption and reduce errors in voice message transmissions during digital stored voice paging operations.

    • A system and method for delayed delivery of a telephone message are described. A user or calling party (114) wishing to deliver a telephone message to a message recipient or called party (126) at another time specifies the destination telephone number, the delivery time, as well as the telephone message to be delivered. This information is preferably input and stored by an input processor (110). To provide for delivery of the telephone message at the time specified by the calling party (114), the current time is accessed and compared to the delivery time. If the delivery time is equal to or prior to the current time, then delivery of the telephone message is initiated. The telephone message is delivered to the message recipient (126) by placing a telephone call to the destination telephone number specified by the user (114).
