    • For a nonperiodical burst signal transmitted from a mobile station in an AGC mode with an unknown transmission power, the AGC is converged in a short time at the beginning of the nonperiodical signal. For a periodical burst signal, transmission power control and interference wave detection are performed according to the presence/absence of the voice signal from the mobile station. These processings are for preventing erroneous control of the AGC and maintaining the communication quality of the radio base station system. In the case of a nonperiodic burst signal, the receiving level is detected at a high speed by only turning on/off an attenuator which has a quick transient response and fixing the gain of the AGC amplifier which has a slow transient response, both being provided as gain control elements. In the case of a periodic burst signal, the erroneous control of AGC is prevented and interferences are detected by utilizing synchronous words contained in the burst signal.

    • An r.f. wideband high power amplifier (1) receives an input signal at its input via a coupling (7) whenever a signal for amplification is applied to input port (15). The output of the amplifier (1) is tapped by a coupler (8) and fed to an input of a comparator (3). The input signal applied at port (14) is fed to a second input of comparator (3) via a delay line (5), arranged to introduce a delay substantially equal to that of the power amplifier (1). Comparator (3) thus produces at its output an error signal representative of the difference between the input signal fed via the amplified and the delayed path. Combiner (16) serves to introduce the amplified error signal to the amplifier output signal such that the error signal is in anti-phase therewith. The resultant signal produced at output port (4) thus has had feed forward distortion cancellation applied. The arrangement further includes compensating networks (8, 9) controlled by signals representing the amplitude and phase distortion introduced by power amplifier (1). The feedback control loops are arranged to function with a fast response time, thereby to achieve amplifier distortion correction which may be additional to prior art slow response amplitude and phase balancing.

    • Automatic gain control, frequently abbreviated to AGC, is applied, for example, in radio receivers in order to control the maximum output level at a constant value independently of fluctuations in the receiver field strength. To obtain simple automatic gain control which requires no equalization, the input signal (S) to be amplified is fed via a controllable switch (SC) and a first low pass (TP1) to an amplifier (V) and via a second low pass (TP2) and an analog-digital converter (AD) to a microprocessor (MP) the output of which is connected to the input of a pulse width modulator (PM). The output of the pulse width modulator (PM) is connected to the control input of the controllable switch (SC). The microprocessor (MP) generates a control signal for the pulse width modulator (PM) in function of the digital values at the output of the analog-digital converter (AD); the pulse width modulator therefore modifies the pulse-width repetition rate of its output signal in function of the control signal.     • An automatic dynamic range controlling circuit which is provided with a first circuit of a fixed gain, and a second circuit that has substantially the same propagation delay time as the first one and has a variable gain. The automatic dynamic range controlling circuit holds a peak value of an input signal and selects the first circuit when the peak value of the input signal is smaller than a reference signal level, and selects the second circuit when the peak value of the input signal exceeds the reference signal level. When the held peak value is smaller than the reference signal level, this controlling circuit is operated at the same gain as that of the first circuit for the input signal by setting the gain to that of the second circuit by the reference signal. When the held peak value exceeds the reference signal level, the gain of the second circuit is limited by the held peak value and the output level is made a specified level or below. Therefore, the discontinuity of a waveform of the output signal is prevented not only on the time base but also on the amplitude base for an excessive input signal level, thereby switching a selected circuit smoothly from the first one to the second one.

A saturating integrator (22) compares the received power signal to a reference signal and generates a gain control signal in response to a result of the comparison. The saturating integrator (22) includes a decision circuit (46) for enabling integration based on values of the received power signal, the reference signal, and the gain control signal. In a preferred implementation, the utilization of an input limiter in conjunction with an analog to digital converter enables accommodation of an increased input signal dynamic range.
