    • A phase lock loop RF modulator system including a phase lock loop circuit having a phase detector circuit responsive to an input reference signal and a feedback signal, an oscillator circuit responsive to the phase detector circuit for providing an output signal, a forward path from the phase detector circuit to the oscillator circuit, and a feedback path from the oscillator circuit to the phase detector circuit. The system also includes a first modulation port coupled to the feedback path, a second modulation port coupled to the forward path, and a gain mismatch detection circuit responsive to modulation data and a phase error between the reference signal and the feedback signal for providing an indicator output signal that represents the gain mismatch between the first modulation port and the second modulation port.

    • The present invention provides a frequency modulator comprising a phase lock loop circuit (108) for receiving and modulating a carrier signal according to the low frequency component of a modulating signal, the phase lock loop circuit comprising a voltage controlled oscillator (118) for outputting a modulated carrier signal and a loop filter (116) for outputting a steering voltage to the VCO, the VCO having a tank circuit (120) comprising a voltage controlled capacitance (VAR1). The frequency modulator also comprises an external voltage controlled capacitance (122) which is arranged to modulate its capacitance according to a high frequency component of the modulating signal, the second voltage controlled capacitance being coupled to the tank circuit. The phase lock loop circuit (108) is further arranged to modulate the steering voltage to the VCO (118) with the high frequency component of the modulating signal.

    • A method and system of frequency for multiplying a signal (data in) having amplitude modulated by an amplitude modulator (10) using a frequency multiplier (13) operated at a bias voltage that is less than its saturation mode voltage. Prior to amplification, the amplitude modulated signal is pre-distorted by a pre-distorting stage (14, 15) to compensate for distortion caused by the frequency multiplier (13). The pre-distorting stage comprises a first pre-distortion phase (14) for converting the amplitude modulated signal into a corresponding square root signal to compensate for a first distortion type and a second pre-distortion phase (15) for pre-distorting the square root signal to compensate for the distortion caused by biasing the frequency multiplier (13) at a voltage less than the saturation voltage of the multiplier. As a result, a signal that is amplitude-modulated can be multiplied by a frequency multiplier (13).
