    • Protective devices for use with conventional over-voltage protectors, especially applicable for use in protection of communication equipment. The device of this invention overcomes the prior art problems of lack of reliability, excessive size and cost, installation and maintenance difficulties, and various other problems more fully understood in the specification. The apparatus in the preferred embodiment features a small, cylindrical housing (10, 11, 12), connectors (13, 14) designed to attach simply to the electrodes of a standard over-voltage protector (23, 23A, 23B), and dual grounding paths for increased reliability and activated upon heat transfer upon sustained overload from the over-voltage protector. These paths are described as from ground-connected plates (16) to normally tensioned springs (17) to plungers (18) to electrical transfer plates (13), effected when fusible elements (19) are fused by heat conducted from the over-voltage protector (23) through heat transfer plate (14).

    • An overvoltage protection circuit is provided for protecting electrical equipment from transients on power lines (41, 42). The circuit has a string of series-connected silicon avalanche diodes (SADs) (40) connected across the power lines (41, 42) to provide an initial clamping threshold before energy-absorbing modules (43a, 43b, 43c) come on line to provide secondary clamping. The modules (43a, 43b, 43c) include a number of metal oxide varistors (MOVs) (44) connected in parallel and a switching device in the form of a gas arrester (45) connected in series with the MOVs (44). A resistance (46) is connected in parallel with the gas arrester (45) to form a high pass filter with the natural capacitance of the MOVs (44). This maintains the voltage across the resistance (46) well below the switch operating level during normal conditions and enables a component such as a 230 V fast acting gas arrester (45) to be used. In an alternative embodiment, the gas arrester (45) may be replaced by a solid state swich, such as a Sidator or a Triac.

    • A protection circuit for protecting circuit elements (TX) connected to line via terminal means (L1 and L2) from the effects of a transient abnormal high voltage surge, comprising a semiconductor switch (TR1, TR2), a first circuit comprising a resistor (R1) in series with the conductor path of the semiconductor switch and a voltage reference means (D1, D2) in parallel with the resistor and a junction of the semiconductor, and a second circuit comprising the first voltage reference means in series with a second voltage reference means (D3), the second circuit being connected in parallel with the resistor. The second circuit further includes a voltage dependent resistance (VC1). When the current through the resistor exceeds normal line current the voltage reference means (D1, D2, D3) clamp the voltage drop across the resistor and turn off the semiconductor switch.
