    • A compression system and method operates upon a serial bit stream of speech encoded data by reading the data in fixed length frames. Each frame is classified by a detector (46) as to whether the frame represents voiced, unvoiced or a silence condition. For a voiced frame, a pitch period (IP) is determined by a pitch detector (47). The bits of the voiced frame are then compared with a reference pitch pattern (RP), so as to detect repetition. When repetition is detected, a repetition count (N), the pitch period (IP), and the reference pitch pattern (RP) bits are stored in a storage device (50) ready for transmission. The compressed data is reconstructed by utilizing a decompressor which interprets the stored information and causes reinsertion of the repetitions.

    • A receiver in a frame based radio communication system includes a speech decoder of the source-filter type which is controlled by means (20, 22, 24) including internal state variables updated on a frame by frame basis for modifying received filter parameters representing background sounds transmitted over a communication channel.     • The invention relates to a method for mutual synchronization of the transmitter's speech encoder and the receiver's speech decoder in a communication system utilizing discontinuous transmitter between the transmitter and the receiver. The discontinuous transmission comprises temporally sequential frame periods of which some periods will contain transmitted frames and some periods contain no transmission; whereby the method contains steps to generate information transmission periods (200) comprising at least one frame and containing information given by a user to said transmitter device, and silence periods (208, 209) having a length of at least one frame period and containing other information than that given by the user. The discontinuous transmission further comprises an irregularly occurring period (T) comprising at least one frame between the information transmission period (200) and the next silence period (208, 209), the irregular period forming a hangover period to determine the information relating to the silence period. In the method according to the invention the number of frame periods is counted in the receiver until a certain moment; the beginning of said silence period (208, 209) is detected; and based on said counted number of frame periods and the beginning of the silence period (208, 209) it is decided whether or not there is a hangover period (T) of said type between said information transmission period (200) and the silence period (208) following the information transmission period.
