    • This invention is an interactive teaching apparatus and method for teaching graphemes, i.e., letter symbols of an alphabet (24, 24'); grapheme names, phonemes (14, 14'), and phonetics are utilized as a display of graphemes (10) having a plurality of distinctive color-coded letters to form words, phrases, and sentences. Each of the distinctive colors corresponds to a characteristic of sound production (20) associated with at least one phoneme or speech sound of at least one of the graphemes. The letters are accompanied by a plurality of visually perceivable images (13), each of which is positioned adjacent to at least one of the graphemes (14, 14', 24, 24') and has a name including at least one phoneme of at least one adjacent grapheme. The apparatus includes a plurality of individually activated sound generating devices (16), each of which is associated with one of the graphemes (14, 14', 24, 24') and generates the name or at least one phoneme associated with the grapheme (14, 14', 24, 24'); and also includes a sound pattern generating device (12) for generating patterns of sounds comprising more than one of the names of the phonemes generated by the plurality of sound generating devices (16).

    • This invention is an interactive learning device in the form of an open book (10) for toddlers and preschoolers, having a plurality of embodiments. In one embodiment the book has three-dimensional letters of the alphabet (26, 30, 31, 32) received by a card (33, 34, 39) that spells a word. The card (33, 34, 39) is adapted to be placed in the book (10) and a speech processor circuit recites the word written therein and sounds the phonic associated with each phoneme in the word when the child places the correct alphabet letters in the card, and repeats the entire word. In a second embodiment the book acts as a simple translator. In a third embodiment the book teaches elementary mathematical operation. In a fourth embodiment the child may learn the sounds and names associated with various animals, and may also translate the animal names. A plurality of shapes and colors may also be represented by cards (33, 34, 39, 40, 64, 72) and indicia bearing units (26, 30, 31, 32, 68, 77).

    • This invention is an apparatus for interactive language training including a trigger generator for eliciting expected audio responses by a user; an expected audio response reference library containing a multiplicity of reference expected responses, the multiplicity of reference expected responses including a first plurality of reference expected responses having acceptable pronunciation and for each of the first plurality of reference expected responses having acceptable pronunciation, a second plurality of reference expected responses each having different pronunciation errors; an audio response scorer which indicates the relationship between the expected audio response provided by the user and the reference expected responses; and a user feedback interface (12, 14, 16), which indicates to the user the pronunciation errors in the expected audio responses provided by the user. The present invention also discloses speech recognition apparatus including at least one data base containing speech elements of at least first and second languages, a receiver receiving spoken speech to be recognized, and a comparator comparing features of said spoken speech with a combination of features of said speech elements of at least first and second languages. It is appreciated that in certain cases a combination of the speech elements may include a single speech element. A method for speech recognition is also disclosed.
