    • A process for producing a liquid-crystal cell which comprises the steps of: a) providing a curable sealant portion in the periphery of the side of an electrode plate that has an electrode or electrodes; b) (i) coating a ferroelectric liquid-crystal composition on the portion surrounded by said sealant portion, with a spacer being preliminarily provided in said portion; (ii) coating spacer-containing ferroelectric liquid-crystal composition on the portion surrounded by said sealant portion; or (iii) coating a ferroelectric liquid-crystal composition on the portion surrounded by said sealant portion and thereafter providing a spacer over said composition; c) defoaming the coated layer of the liquid-crystal composition by heating during or after evacuation; d) placing the other electrode plate in such a way that the side of said other electrode plate which has an electrode or electrodes faces the side of said one electrode plate containing the thermally defoamed coated layer of the liquid-crystal composition and compressing the two electrode plates together; and e) curing said sealant. A process according to claim 1 which further includes the step of heating the liquid-crystal cell after step (e) is disclosed.

    • The four corners of a generally rectangular sealing member (11) which is provided between a device substrate (10) and a facing substrate (20) are triangularly cut and removed to form cut parts (11b). Through-conductors (13) with which signal input pads (18) formed on the device substrate are electrically connected to transparent electrodes (22) formed on the facing substrate are formed in the generally triangular regions which are defined by the cut parts (11b). The through-conductors are substantially uniformly distributed along the outer periphery of the sealing member. The through-conductors function as supporting columns for joining the device substrate and the facing substrate to each other. Even if the facing substrate is pressed against the sealing member partially when both the substrates are joined to each other, the deformation of the sealing member is suppressed. As a result, the harmful influence upon the sealing ability of the sealing member in a liquid crystal apparatus can be avoided and, further, a uniform cell thickness can be obtained.

    • A method suitable for producing large scale light modulating liquid crystal devices having a very thin layer, say 15 mu m thick, of liquid crystal containing material (6), preferably a mixture capable of forming polymer stabilised liquid crystal ("PSCT") material, sandwiched between two substrates (2, 4), at least one of which is glass. The liquid crystal containing material (6) is applied to the first substrate (2) before the second substrate (4) is brought into contact, and the substrates (2, 4) are compressed, for instance between rollers (18, 22), to achieve the required thickness of liquid crystal material. Spacers keep the substrates (2, 4) the requisite distance apart. Liquid crystal containing material (6) capable of forming PSCT material also requires polymerising, say, by exposing the compressed sandwich to UV radiation.
