    • A controllable pneumatic apparatus (400), comprising a braking device (420) coupled to a pneumatic actuator (27) for allowing precise motion control (e.g., stopping at any point along its stroke). The braking device includes a working space having a preferably porous matrix structure (30) disposed therein. A field responsive medium (28) is retained in the matrix structure. In operation, activation of a field generator (80) in the device generates a field to act on the field responsive medium to change its apparent viscosity thereby producing a braking force to control motion of the pneumatic actuator. A braking device is also described which has spacing means for maintaining a constant gap dimension of the working space, thus preventing excessive compression of the matrix.

    • A movable clamping element (56) engages a workpiece, whereby a spring (86) is compressed, limiting the amount of clamping force applied to the workpiece. A retainer nut (88) is selectively moved through the use of the tool to a selectable position along a threaded shaft (80) to adjust the spring compression, hence the clamping force. After initial setup, an electrochemical actuator (110) is actuated to melt a polymer, forcing a piston assembly (118, 120) and a bearing (84) to shift the threaded shaft (80) longitudinally against the spring, moving the clamping elements apart a short distance to release or receive a workpiece. The electrochemical actuator is then deactivated, allowing the spring to expand, clamping the workpiece between the clamping elements with the selected force.

    • The invention relates to a vibration damper for belt tensioning systems comprising a piston which is rotationally mounted in a housing and which divides the housing into a first and second chamber filled with a hydraulic fluid. The first and second chambers are interconnected via a throttle point and the volume ratio of the first and second chambers changes when the piston moves in relation to the housing. The aim of the invention is to provide a vibration damper having a variable damping effect over the entire crankshaft speed range. To this end, the throttle point is configured as at least one annular gap (22), whereby an electrorheological and/or magnetorheological fluid is contained in the first and second chambers (16', 16'' ) as well as in the at least one annular gap (22), and electrically controllable capacitor surfaces and/or coil arrangements are assigned to the peripheral surfaces (14', 20) of the annular gap (22). In addition, the control is effected according to a measured variable representing the belt tension.
