    • The invention relates to a chromium-based coating comprising chromium (Cr), carbon (C) and iron (Fe), Cr being electroplated from a trivalent Cr bath.     • The invention relates to a method for applying a metal layer to surfaces of light metals. Iron of an aqueous deposition bath that contains Fe(II)-compounds is electrolytically deposited on the surfaces by means of dimensionally stable anodes which are insoluble in said deposition bath. The method is particularly suitable for coating cylinder bearing surfaces of internal combustion engines and of rotationally symmetrical components, especially valves, nozzles and other components of high-pressure injection systems for motors of motor vehicles, with layers that are provided with a very high resistance to wear and tear. The invention also relates to nanocrystalline iron/phosphor layers which can preferably be formed by depositing iron in the presence of compounds which contain orthophosphite and/or hypophosphite. Said layers are provided with good corrosion resistance in addition to the good resistance to wear and tear.
